Partners with my brother, Holt, on our ‘64 project convertible here in this forum, and I’m proud of this ‘94 Miata I built with the heart of a Vette... LS2, T56, and Ford 8.8 LSD IRS diff. Every now and then you need a 2,500 lb Roadster with stock 400 hp for quick runs to Starbucks.

I started autocrossing regularly in the early 90's with a '73 Corvette, L48 and 4-speed. Even with 3:36 gears it was always a handful and guaranteed to spin it out at least once an event. In the meantime the Miata's started showing up and doing exceptionally well. I was most impressed by how quickly many of the owners progressed. Most were running at 90% within a few events. With the '73 on the other hand, I was probably pushing 85% after a year. I told myself, if the opportunity presented itself, one day I would get one just to have fun with.
In 1994 I bought this Miata while stationed in Japan. Soon after returning to the U.S. I started autocrossing it and have found it to be an absolute blast to drive. After the first year I did buy 'R' compound tires and ratcheted the fun up a notch. (These things grip on a wet track as well as street tires do on a dry one.) It is a car that is so balanced you can quickly drive to 95% of it's potential and it's diesel truck reliable. I've raced it for over 10 years and have autocrossed C3's, C4's, C5's and even our sons' C6 Z06 in the same time frame. None of them are nearly as easy to drive fast. With care and concentration each of them will do faster times, but none will do it as consistently as the Miata in the hands of the same driver.
No one will ever confuse it with a Sting Ray, but the smile when autocrossing it remains the same...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
However, please don’t bother...really...don’t bother.
