Default '65 I plan to purchase needs tires asap-suggestions

Plan to get ;'65 coupe in a few weeks
She has 90's era knock off (repro) and yellow lines now (from 1991 I believe) (the tires look should only have 100 miles on them; but I fear they are too old for me too drive?)

After I left, he found a set of bolt on's that looked like knock off's; they will be transferred with the car also

I want to get new tires on for safety reasons asap.

Thinking I might use the nice knock off wheels and put the new wheels on them...
I read thru the first 4-5 pages on the forum and I see a good bit of chat about Avon CR6ZZ 225/60-15
Are there other tires that are a safe bet for general use that you guys like?
(trying to avoid getting pigeon holed into Avon's, if that is more of a niche tire)

Thanks guys
Bryan

For general driving around town and obeying your local laws Cooper, Firestone, Good Year among others make a tire that fits and functions just fine.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II radials are decent and won’t break the bank.

215/70-15 seems to be the largest size that will fit without rubbing, otherwise go with 205/70-15.

there has been a good bit of discussion on tire size, wheel size, and back spacing, if your looking to fit a 225/60R-15 tire on a repo knock off or bolt on wheel you may have some rubbing issues, I'm not familiar with the backspacing of those wheels stick with the 215-70 or 205-70, larger tires may require a wheel with custom backspacing.

What kind of tires do you want?? Whitewall, gold line, red line, raised white letter?? I assume you want radials for driving, or do you want tires for judging??

Diamondback uses modern radials with custom sidewalls. Check them out.

Let us know your preference so we can help more/better. The sizes shown above are about the max size you can use without issues.

Great Question!
I am new to the C2 scene, so I was curious what the answers may be...
For starters, I need some drving tires; I do not plan to enter any shows for points etc
But I wanted to keep the stock look as practical

I was thinking radials for driving, had not thought about gold, red or white...
It is hard as I don't really know what I like at the moment

If the tires I had (yellow line) weren't so old; I would be quite content
So, if there is a radial option to keep the yellow or red; I am good with that too.
I think I need to look around more and see what is "the norm" as far as colors...
Thanks

White line and black wall tires can be had at your local tire store for around 90 bucks each. Red, and gold lines are mail order for about 250 each

Why don't you drive carefully for a while with the tires that come on the car, while you get your wits about you.
That way you won't be wasting money buying things twice, because the thing you thought you wanted before you got the car turned out to not be what you really wanted?

I would agree this is sound advice, however the tires are almost 30 yrs old, if they were installed in 1991, I would have some concern about them.

If they are bias ply tires and not radials, and not cracked or dried out, why? The tires on my '61 are that old, and I drive on them without issues, and have for the past 4 years. I've driven on tires over 70 years old on antique cars (ok....those WERE hard as rocks!). The issue with tires exploding and tearing body panels off the car only applies to STEEL BELTED RADIALS. Bias ply tires simply blow out and go flat, or turn into bakelite and ride and handle like crap.

I just assumed they were radials, you are right I would be far more inclined to drive it with bias ply tires.

P205/75 R15 are the stock size tires that came from the factory. With the stock suspension the more rubber that you have, the better the ride in general, especially over bumpy roads.

My preference is Cooper Trendsetter 205 75 15 White Walls. Stock size and about 60 bucks a tire at discount tire.
