I'm not waiting around to find out if it's bad right at the moment I decide to "see what she'll do"
So, as soon as I got my vette I got a Uniden R3. I don't regularly speed, but I've found that vettes seem
to "creep" up there before you know it.
Same. I don't speed much around town, PSPD doesn't even have regular speed traps here. Pretty lax atmosphere regarding traffic. But I usually take one along when I road trip. Does Oregon still have the 55 limit?
I seldom go above the "secret speed limit" - which as everybody knows is 5 mph above the posted limit....so I don't concern myself with radar. In my small Florida town our horribly underpaid police force of 8-9 officers tend to be a bit over-zealous in their duties, so I don't even push it around town.
After my wreck in the neighboring town of Winter Garden, I wrote a glowing letter to the police chief afterwards about how his staff handled the incident - they love me. I don't know if I'll EVER get at ticket there...
I like crusing at 5mph over posted highway/interstate speed limits, so I have no need for a radar detector. Around Wash. DC traffic and speed cameras keep Ricky Racers in check.

Greg, they did 2 years ago when I was in Oregon. Really hard to drive 55 after driving 75-80 legally in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Utah.
I have not used one in years. I use the 10% rule and drive 10% over the posted limit all the time and have not had a problem. Anything over that I think you are pushing your luck.
A little trivia that I believe I have the fact straight on. Years ago Cinncinati Microwave I believe made both the police radar units and the radar detectors. Each time they made a new unit using a different band you then had to buy a new radar detector. Quite the racket. They are now out of business and I don't know who makes this stuff now. The president of the company is a big car collector and in fact owns my old 1957 Air box Corvette.
Local police use K and Ka. State troopers use Ka, laser and aerial. I have various levels of detection in every car. I just got a portable Escort iX for the SWC and am very happy with it.
Hey Greg, just got into your area today. I'm at the Catalina Spa RV in Desert Hot Springs for a week in my motor home. Working my way back to Oregon. Looking forward to some spring wx so I can get the old Hemi/Vette out again. Oregon freeways are 65 but rural roads are still 55. Here she is waiting for me.
John,
The older I get the faster I was, but nowadays the posted speed limit is fine with me. Here in the Albuquerque area our cops are so under staffed many people drive as if there were NO speed limits. Also, I think 50% of the people here are armed! So I am polite even when others are not. Some drivers are ready and willing to send lead your way. Good luck! bill

It's not ONLY that I've gotten a little smarter over the years. Another factor is the tools the LEO's have today are so very much more sophisticated. When I was first driving, they had to put the radar unit on a tripod, and radio ahead to "stoppers" a half mile down the road. I believe that radar could only get you as you approached, not going away. Today they can get you coming or going, from ahead or behind or whatever else. Not to mention plate readers, lasers and who knows what.
Ya can't get away with NUTHIN', I tell ya!
I've never owned a radar detector. I'll go a few mph over, and if I'm on an Interstate I'll ride in the middle of a large pack if they're all zipping along, but for the most part my foot is way lighter than it used to be.

If you speed in a classic car in any of the urban areas of Florida (where there is most likely to be radar) then you're an idiot....
A cop will pull you over, write you up, give you a lecture and then brag back at the station about how he "nailed" some old guy in an old, fast Corvette.
And then our old-azz reaction times aren't what they used to be, our cars are hard to see in many cases and the dolts driving econoboxes or minivans can't be counted on to not do something stupid
If you're on a nice, long, straight country road in good weather and having a bout of testosterone-poisoning then go for it...
However, don't let your exuberance get you into trouble - 65tripleblack did and he is no longer with us...

When I drive one of my "pleasure " cars I do it for that reason, pleasure.
The faster I go is the less time I have to enjoy the ride.
I always use the right lane and watch the traffic go by on the left side. Many a time I notice a thumbs up in the passing car.
There is a downside to driving a classic Corvette.....there are those that want to:
a) challenge you - I've had a few ricers try to goad me into a red light runoff, and,
b) some think because you can afford such a car that you are a well-off, arrogant so-and-so and you deserve a ticket or at least some tail-gating and harassment - believe me, I've seen that too.
I stay to the right and let the aggressive drivers doing 20mph over the limit speed by me...
I have one in my '16 Z06. Just because I should. I rarely drive anything else over 75-80, and even then, it just very short duration.
The unified standard rule for issuing a ticket (google it if you don't believe me), which most, but not all jurisdictions follow is speed limit +10% + 2 MPH is where they may or may not write you ticket, over that gets a ticket, under, generally not.
In AZ, where they follow that, on the interstate that is 75+7+2, or 84 MPH you are OK, 85 you are not. Other places in metro PHX, they generally won't pull you over for less than 95, like the 101 thru Scottsdale.
