Shows that the car has been well cared for and stored indoor most of its life. Generally 25-30 year old lacquer paint is cracking and beginning to peel in spots...........especially if left outdoors in all weather.
I have 40 year old lacquer repaint with clear lacquer on top for extra gloss. Fine/hairline cracks show at stress points, but so far paint has hung in there............but the handwriting is on the wall. But most folks that see it today think it was just recently painted for show.

Actually, while it was parked in a hangar for 40 years, and it's been pampered for the last 5 since then, it's first 10 years on the road were daily driver in Chicago!
140K miles of daily driving.. It's got it's share of cracks and checks... but for 60 year old paint, it's amazing.

Chicago winters are some of the worst. I grew up on the South Side during this time (50's-60's-early 70's). Lots of cold, snow, road salt, and cinders during the winters. I am sure the frame showed a few "war wounds" after 10 years. But it looks pretty now.
are you looking to do a full repaint or touch up, i ask this because a few years ago i had to have the nose of a white 63 shot, the car had been painted with single stage Ermine white 5 years prior and had always been garaged, when i picked up the car it looked like a perfect match, until i put it in my garage and under the flurescent lighting the nose looked a shade darker, very noticable, rolled the car out into the sunlight and you couldent tell it was repainted, no diffrence in the shade, only under certain lighting could you see a diffrence..

Wow, that is dramatic, and actually gives me hope. My E-White 64 convertible has some serious crazing on the hood, especially on the front/end of the spear, along with other areas around the hood / cowl, and the side faux vents as well. The car still looks great at 10', and in pics looks flawless, but up on it the crazing is quite evident, and big flakes come off if I wipe it aggressively. I am hoping to have some success with just having the troubled areas painted, and see how it goes. White can be very forgiving to blending in daylight - self evident in your photos! I know many would say "just do it right, and paint the entire car". Well, I could but have no issue with economizing the work. I am in no way trying to create a show-car level finish, per se. It is a driven car, and it will stay that way. How much did it cost to have the front-end painted? What was the prep?
a little over 2,000, they it was prepped well, there were no issues with the front surround or fenders, most of the problemes revolved around cracking on the hood, the shop took the hood down to primer removing all the cracked paint, the surround and fenders were taken down almost to primer and primed before paint., this was about 5 years ago.

I'm hoping to just paint the front end and rear quarters. While I do have some minor cracking, the rest of the paint is in good condition. My real issue is I want to drive the damn thing! I’m going to complete the body work and get it ready for paint. At that point I’m make the final decision, but I’m leaning heavily towards just spraying those areas or even doing it myself, even though several years ago I swore I would no longer paint cars. Then at some point in the future I’ll get a proper paint job.
you know there is nothing wrong with tooling around in primer, its a work in progress, and there would be so much else to look at with your build other than paint. I have painted a door here a fender there, but never a whole car, its not shooting the paint that i dont like, its not even the prep, its setting up to actually lay down the paint, i would do it if there were some place you could rent out a paint booth.
Original (mostly) ermine white on my 67. Looks good from 10 ft away. I've heard the white cars had better durability due to the paint mixture- high lead content ? Wondering were they able to get the paint ovens in St. Louis hot enough for true reflow or did they rely on polishing more than the steel car part of the plant ?.
