1967 corvette brake caliper, my left front caliper has blown a seal leaking fluid, should I rebuild it or just buy a remanufactured one, and who is the most reliable store to purchase from. Ian

Personally, regardless of which way you go I always do BOTH sides on (front or rear) when such things need repaired.

Recommend Lone Star or CSSB, Inc. Lone Star in Texas and CSSB in Florida.

If your calipers are original or the correct casting/part number, I would rebuild rather than exchange..............although you could probably make sure to get the exact exchange versus just any casting that will fit. Both companies will rebuild your calipers or sell you good parts.

My current calipers are lip seal as original and I have been using DOT 5 fluid for over 20 years. But if I had to redo things today, I likely would just go for o-ring seals. I was not sure how they would work, but I have not heard any complaints in the 15-20 years since they were first introduced. I do not know if you can o-ring the fronts and leave the rears as lip seals...........but probably can. However, I would ask/inquire from these companies.

If you plan to keep the car for many years, maybe you just redo all four at the same time. If your calipers already have SS sleeves, you can do it yourself at home. But if you have the $$$ and want the best job, pack them up and have Lone Star or CSSB do the rebuilding.

If it was my own car, I would do all four and do them at home. I would use the o-rings. Then forget about them for the next 15 years (except to flush DOT 3/4 fluid every 5 years if this is what you use. )

If you have 4 originals I would fix it. If the car already has 1 or 2 replaced just get a rebuilt one and be done.

For 1965 thru early 1967 model year, the calipers are #546xxxx

For 1967 late thru 1972 model year, the calipers are #545xxxx

For 1973 thru 1982 the calipers are #547xxxx

Your calipers are not original to the car. At least the one that is pictured. May or may not be SS sleeved already.

The calipers from Lone Star are available from several Vette part houses. Just call your favorite and ask if they resell Lone Star. Dennis

Auto Zone here sells re-man Delco for $65. They work great. If they let you dig through the boxes you may find the correct ones...

Mine on my 67 were original - so I kept them and will have them rebuilt in the future..

Lone Star is a major rebuilder of Corvette (and non-Corvette) brake components for our old cars. They went from a small shop to a major rebuilder that typically only sells wholesale. But the owner also has a soft spot for us Corvette guys, and lets us buy direct and have custom work done. So you can either shop for places that sell LS, or call them directly. Owner's name is Ken.

There are plenty of inexpensive sources, but they're not SS sleeved. SS sleeves are a must when replacing.

Mine leaked every season, i finally had enough and had them SS sleeved sand O ringed, no more leakes. and its been 8 years since they were rebuilt.

I would open up the failing caliper and determine if it has been sleeved. If so, buy an O-ring kit which includes pistons and rebuild all of the wheels. The kits cost about $150. The rebuild job is easy. I used denatured alcohol to clean the calipers. I went through a box of pipe cleaners and a few rifle brushes to clean the inner passages. If the calipers are not sleeved, then send them to one of the vendors mentioned above. I would still use O-rings for a car driven seasonally. Jerry

My new Lonestar calipers are installed, used a snap on brake bleed hydraulic tool, worked out ok, feeling like I would like a firmer pedal, I might try to do it the old way, pump the pedal hold release the fitting and tighten up, if I can I get someone to help. Ian
