First off what is the bore size? Next option would be a sonic test of the cylinder wall thickness. You've already found the same info I'm aware of in 65-66 that block may have been used for both.

in the years I have been active on this forum, NCRS forum and a Chevelle forum and this topic comes up not one time has it been proved with a shadow of a doubt that a 961 block started out as a 427 engine.

what is the bore of a standard 942 block 427??? anyone?? i can check my 961 block but sure its a 396.

427= 4.250 bore
396= 4.094 bore

961 blocks were all 396s, if bore measures to 427 someone previously bored it accordingly, does this sound like an easy sum up?
