Default Frame restoration

Starting a frame on restoration. Starting with the chassis. I have the frame down to bare metal. My question is what paint to use for the frame? Anything close to factory application?

After a lot of research the closest that I have found is POR 15 Chassiscoat semi gloss black.
It can be sprayed or brushed on. I sprayed my 67 chassis and am very happy with the result.
After you paint it leave it for 3-4 days as it continues to cure, although dry within 4-6 hours. Re coat if needed in 3-5 hours. I didnt need to as it covered everything in 1 coat.

I hope the above poster has better luck with POR15 paint on the frame then I did and most people I talk to. I would have the frame sandblasted then powder coated or spray with a good epoxy paint

Kinda hard to powder coat a chassis with the body on the frame.
This is the chassis black stuff if you want to be correct:....its really messy though:

Take a look at Rustoleum Satin Black enamel. Brush it on. No primer needed. The sheen and finish is just how you want it to look, (unless. you want powder coat appearance)
and it's just as durable as you will ever need for a weekend driver.

Me too, I would use nearly anything else after putting up with the mess that asphalt based Quanta goo made....but the OP asked for correct so that was my response - been there, done that:

Does this recommendation also hold for C1s? I may want to do my frame next winter.

And - how do you do you get to top of frame with on frame restoration?

What's a C1?
I didn't get to the top of the frame when I did my frame. Just the parts I could reach.

One of our CF regulars years ago, John McGraw, was also a very talented paint and body man and restored a number of Corvettes. Beautiful work. He recommended PPG DP-40 Epoxie Primer (requires catalyst) in the black color (many colors available) followed by PPG Acrylic Enamel with harder or Acrylic Urethane (requires catalyst) in black with flattening agent to produce a satin finish.

You may still find some of his posts and advice in the archives.

If you have the time and equipment, this is the way to go. It will last longer than the steel substrate.

I had asked a similar question as I did a frame on suspension clean up, and i also did some of the frame while I was at it & I was told to use John Deere "Blitz Black" which worked great for me. I blasted and painted everything and have no complaints about the Blitz Black. I am also never going to have the car judged, but I do enjoy it looking pristine from top to bottom.

Rob, your Vette parts look great in the photos, but those ski boots are ready for replacement. Great photos, thanks for sharing.

On C1s that's really tough on a non-sidepipe C2 removing the rocker moldings will get you at least some access..
