Default Big Block Engine Pad Stamping Question

What do I have here? This is the engine pad from my 67 Corvette. The VIN does not match my car, but is this the correct stamping for a 1967 L71?

The VIN part of that pad looks suspicious to me. The numbers are inconsistent in depth and vary in shape from standard, and there looks to be remnants of prior characters having been stamped.

Yes, that is a correct stamp pad for a 67 L71. JE is the suffix for 435 hp manual trans. Stamp date 03 27 for Mar 27.
7 116428 is the vin for the car built in April 1967. So, the 3/27 engine conforms well with the car built in early Apr.
Is the stamping factory or not? I can't answer that. You would need to compare to the appearance of known factory marks of similar date.

This short block with the 7116428 T0327JE stamping was for sale in the Dec 1995 issue of Hemmings Motor News on page 10158 in the state of Georgia. The car ( a goodwood green convert with white/black trim) was owned by a current NCRS member who sold it about 25 years ago. He still has the tank sticker for the car. I do not see anything wrong with the stamping. It looks like the other JE stamps for late March 1967 and the vin numbers look like the other cars in the 164xx range to me.

Looks to me like you have the original engine to another '67 L71.

Which probably is reported to still have it's original engine.

That could well be! I wonder if the car still exists somewhere and, if so, why the engine would have been removed and sold? I'd sure like to find the original engine for my L-71 coupe, which was, according to the NCRS Shipping Data Report, sold at Triangle Chevrolet in Raleigh, NC and was, until the early to mid 80s, located in the Atlanta area.

Thanks Packrat....great info! I wonder where that car is now? Maybe the owner would like its engine back!! My car is a Goodwood Green 1967 L71 coupe, so the engine has returned to a somewhat familiar locale at least. I think the stamp is legit....no incentive for anyone to mess with it. My car was sold to me with the understanding that the motor was not the original L71,. Fortunately, I have the tank sticker for my car as well, which the NCRS has authenticated. I'd love to find the original engine for my car, which was located in the Atlanta Georgia area as late as the early 80's. The last 3 digits of the VIN are 333 so it is fairly distinctive. If anyone has any leads on the engine or ownership history of the car, I'd love to hear from them!

Just get a repro vin tag to match your motor - problem solved.

When the time comes to sell it - cosign it to Trump, all is good

KingRat may I ask what program or app you use to combine parts of stamp pictures so uniformly for comparison?

That happens. Or a 6 used as a 9 or vice versa.
