Default Spare tire

Can someone help me with the correct tire size for the spare tire on a 64 Vette? We just discovered that the standard tire size does not fit. The old spare tire said low profile. Thanks! And where to purchase the spare tire?

JD, I recently went through the vary same thing with my '64. Like an idiot (thought I was being smart) I ordered five new radial tires with the fifth being for my spare. 205-70 R15. Didn't and will never fit in the tub. With the help from some of the guys here, this is what I did. I took my original wheel back to the tire shop, had them remove the new radial tire and mount and balance this tire.

It fits your standard 15 wheel, it's small enough to fit and big enough to help you get to a service station and it's cost is very good. Many guys look for the temp spare from a Chevy S10 (mid to late 90's model), but they have become hard to find and about the same cost of doing it this way. I hope this helps. Good luck.

ALL five tires where the same size from the factory. however reproduction bias tires are not 100% correct in size and therefor will not fit fully inflated. the radial equivalent wont either.

That sounds like a plan and the price is very right! Do you know if the tire diameter in the spare tire compartment is the big deal or the tire width? Does the 6.5" tire width work? Thank you so much!

20575R15 on a 6 inch rim with the longer front bolts fits. Lid doesn't close 100% flat but about 90% which is fine. Tire fully inflated.

Assuming you have the OEM spare tire tub and the original 5.5" width wheel, this suggested tire fits fine. The depth of the tub is roughly 7+ inches. The width of the tire when mounted and inflated is roughly 6.5", so it will fit without having to drop the lid down slightly to make it fit as suggested by one of the previous posts. Once again, if you have the original spare tire carrier, a 15x5.5" wheel you will have no problems with it fitting. Here is a picture of mine before I pushed it in and locked it down.

A big thanks to Pilot Dan. He was the one that suggested this problem fix and it worked perfectly.

This is the exact size tire I’m storing in my 59, fits great. Tire diameter is not the same, 25.4”, so if you’re running posi you might have to change your tire twice.

heres another question: if you get a flat and use your spare, the regular tire doesn’t fit in the compartment, does the regular size tire go in the car with you?

IIRC you can carry the fat tire in the tub but it won’t close all the way.
