Default C2 Underhood Clearance: Big-block Hood vs. Small-block hood

Compared to a small-block hood, how much more room does a big-block C2 hood give you in the air cleaner area?

Is the answer the same for '67 hood as it is for '65-'66 hood?

For the 65/66 BB hood probably around 1" to 1-1/4" just judging from the lines of the bulge. A little of the advantage is lost due to the offset for the engine that puts the right edge of the air cleaner closer to the downward slope of the bulge on that side.

Thanks, Dan. Now does, anyone here know the answer for a '67 big-block hood?

Without the plenum (L88 style) they are almost identical within the 14” diameter where a standard air cleaner would sit.

My ‘64 coupe with stock hood.

Same ‘64 coupe with ‘66 BB hood.

My ‘64 convertible with ‘67 BB hood.

‘67 BB hood before the L88 style plenum.

And after.

I have a 1965 Corvette with:

Small block 1965 Corvette hood
stock engine manifold
Holley EFI throttle body-supposed to be the same height of a Holley carburetor.

How much clearance do I have from throttle body flange to 1965 Corvette small block engine hood?

Get some modeling clay or silly putty and place three ***** of about 1-1/2" diameter on the front and third points around the circumference of the air cleaner lid and then gently close the hood. Open it again and measure the thickness of the squished *****. That's the best way to find out for each individual car.

Did you find out your hood clearance on your small block hood? Does each year have a difference clearance? Seems like there must be an average clearance?

Hey Dan, I did just that on my 67/390. Don't have very much room, about 3/8" - 1/2" between air cleaner and hood. I do have a phenolic spacer between carb and manifold for any percolation so that may account for the minimal clearance that I have. I remember "John Z" mentioning years ago that the intake manifold for the 427 is kind of unique, slightly lower mainly for hood clearance.

I did it years ago and from memory mine was pretty tight, but I have a C3 era LS6/L88 intake.

With my 1965 small block hood.

I was thinking Spectre Plenums SPE-9824 with a 2" height from flange, Both will have red conical cone shape air filters. OR

My second thought was SPE-98599 with a 2.4" height from flange and have it go paralleled with the engine. Follow the middle bump of the hood. Thinking this extra room will fit.

What do you think?

I have no idea with those aftermarket air intakes.
