Default Down Pipes

Building my own exhaust system. Are down pipes a better quality steel than the rest of the exhaust system do to the potential of hotter exhaust?

The pipe coming from the exhaust manifold is what I am referring to as the down pipe. I wonder if it is the same quality as the rest of the exhaust system.

I don't ever remember noticing any difference in material or gage thickness on older cars between head pipes and tail pipes. Newer cars with Cats may be another story.

Seems I remember some factory dual exhaust systems from the 60s/early 70s ran a right side muffler with SS innards (not sure about shell) due to moisture collection and corrosion from the heat riser. But I can't remember where I read that or what make(s) it was in reference to.

They are the same as the rest of the pipes in the system and the correct term for that part of the system is the exhaust pipes.

Use stainless if you are worried about them rusting out.

I used the term down pipes because Walker Exhaust uses it as well as Summit Racing. Sorry for any confusion. I am satisfied and will be using the regular exhaust pieces. Thank you for everyones help.
