Default C2 vs C8?

I'm a longtime owner of a 1967 coupe that I purchased in 1995. The day that I looked I first drove the car I looked at 2-year-old 6-speed coupe for the same price. I never regretted that decision! I have an opportunity now to sell the 1967 and buy a brand new 2023 C8 coupe that will be delivered to a dealer at the end of the month for about the same price as an offer from a prospective buyer on my car. If I buy the C8, I would never drive it more than 2K miles per year. I can only afford one of the cars. I recognize that the driving experience is completely different; but after 4 years of C8 production and 100,000 cars delivered, I see them on the road all of the time. Which would you do?

I have a C1, C2 and C5Z. I would keep the 67 if I was you. Personally I don’t care to ever own another one that’s not a C1 or C2. Each year more and more C8 cars come out and then there will be a C9 and the C8 will no longer be special. A 67 will always be a classic.

Tough call. I have a C1 & C8 and probably drive them combined less than 2k a year. The C8 is a mind blowing experience and no way to compare it to a C2 except the C2 is a time machine (IMO).

If you're only going to drive it 2k miles a year keep the 67. The C8 would make a killer daily driver

I bought my 63 SWC hotrod in 1978. I was tempted to sell and buy new when the new C4s came out. Again with the C5, 6, 7 and 8. Looking back I have no regrets about staying with my C2. I'll probably feel the same when the C9 emerges too. Your mileage may differ.

Good luck with that decision. I have both and I would rather rob a bank than sell either one. Nevertheless, I am 73 and not a mechanic so I would probably select reliability, comfort and technology. FWIW, I average about 3k miles a year in the C8 and about 300 miles in the C2. I would ask around, find someone with a C8 that would let you drive it. Then decide.

Comparing the technology and performance of the cars in 1967 v.s. 2023 is like comparing the telephone of 1967 v.s. the 2023 model in you hand. The C2 is fading away, but if you consider the appreciation in value and get the timing right, no doubt you will be successful in making huge capital gains on your 1967 that you will undoubtedly share with the IRS. .
You might compare the enjoyment of the cars with that of a marriage that starts out young and furious and full of emotion and evolves over 50+ years to a friendship and devotion with only memories and bragging rights of having the nostalgic "best of the time".
Only you can decide. I have everything I need as a simple redneck even without the cars, but am a simple man.

I look at this way, the 93 vette you previously looked at is now worth $8-10,000, where as your 67 has only gone up in value & this same thing will happen to the C8.

I actually prefer driving old cars myself, because sure the new one is fast, but honeslty all that speed/power does is get you into a really bad/dangerous situation faster, & I just dont have the desire to be put in dangerous situations all the time, plus the second the new C9 is out, you've got the old one nobody wants, thats never good feeling. That won't happen to a C2, the C9 guy will be watching you go by.

The C8's capabilities, far exceed my own, and everyone else's too, thats why you see so many at Copart. I'll stick with something that I'm more likely to enjoy at a more reasonable pace. Basically, I know I'd drive a C8 like an idiot on occasion, so I don't want to put myself in that situation.

I remember as a kid, my dad getting his all new 84 Corvette that he had to have! It was the first one i had ever seen, so cool! Then I distinctly remember working at the GM tech center as a 21 year old engineer, just out of college, & i had a corporate lease on a 95 Vette, and seeing my first C5 as it came thru the tunnel in front of me & suddenly my car wasnt the coolest thing around anymore. I was an engineer on the C6 Corvette, which made the C5 old news... I can tell you the first time I saw a C7, it was coming towards me on a 2 lane road & i was thinking it was a Ferrari or something.... the story still continues.

I had this figured out young, I bought my C2 when my C4 lease was up in my early 20s, instead of a C5 & everyone told me i was nuts. All these years later, they now tell me how smart I was to do that...

I have a 67 BBC Coupe and a C8 HTC.

I would be hard to decide which one to sell.

I would say if you're not mechanically inclined go with the C8 and don't look back.

I am on my second C8. I've had a coupe and now a convertible. Great cars, but I would never give up a midyear for a C8. I almost made that mistake back in 85 for a brand new C4. How would that look now? Keep your 67 and drive it.

Nice choice to have and consider...

For me - I would keep the '67 if only because I believe it is Waaaay Easier to go find a good new or used C8 than to go find another Mid Years Corvette.
Drive a C8 and if that's what you want do it and don't look back but if there are doubts, the '67 is way harder to replace.

In CT the property tax alone on a C8 would be about 1,500 a year. The property tax on a C2 is around 20 dollars given the way they classify old cars. That is a hard nut to swallow if you really wouldn't be driving the car that much. Just another factor to think of depending on how your state taxes and deals with car registrations fees when fully evaluating the C2 vs C8 possible change over.

It’s a personal thing. I made the same decision back in 1985 when I sold my 66-427 coupe and ordered a new 85 Corvette. Three years later I was bored to death with it. A large part of my auto interests are working on vintage cars, tuning, repairs, refinishing, etc. All I could do with that 85 was wash it now and then and drive around a little in it. Sold it and bought another 66-427 coupe that needed a little of everything and went back to my primary interests and never looked back. But that was just me. If you don’t particularly like the mechanical and maintenance aspects of an old car or are getting to where you can’t do it, and just prefer to cruise around in it and punch it once in awhile then the new car may be the better choice for you.

Wonder what the response would be if you asked this on the C8 forum. Unlike many C2 owners who have responded that selling their C2 is out of the question... clearly it's not out of question for you. Have you fulfilled your C2 passion... at least to the point you're willing to explore another "relationship"? Sounds to me like you are and if the C8 doesn't give you as much pleasure and excitement, sell it and get back into C2. Unless you have some crazy, exclusively configured, rare C2... meh... you can get another. You may pay more or less for another C2, but you'd have experienced a C8 in this journey called life. My wife has a high performance SUV. It handles, drives, and provides an environment WAY better/nicer than my C2. I KNOW if I had a C8 in addition to my '66, we would drive it FAR more than my nostalgic link to my youth. If no way you can have both and walking into the garage and the coupe doesn't stir you heart... get the C8. If you're married, you and your wife will probably enjoy it far more in travels. My '66 is nothing but a toy that I love. If your attachment to your coupe has waned, I see little chance of regret if you enjoy this new, younger mistress for a while and when bored, get another, nicer C2 if inclined. Will be watching. Cheers Larry

Obviously this is a matter of personal choice. You have to ask yourself why you want to own either car. For me, I like older cars for a lot of reasons. I like the way they drive and I like the fact that they are uncommon on the street. How many C2's do you see driving down the road? Where I live, I see less than one a C2 month. I see about five C8's every day. At a cars and coffee, My 65 and my 67 will always draw a lot of attention. At the same event, there will be four or five C8's and everybody just walks by them. I actually ordered a C8 when they were first announced. On paper they looked great and I was excited about the whole mid-engine concept. When I saw the first one in person, I cancelled the order. To me, they are just too big and I don't care for the proportions. In the end, the whole experience was good for me in that it led me to buy my first Porsche and I love that car. To me, new cars are nice in that they make good daily drivers. They are reliable and the automatic transmissions are nice in stop and go traffic. If you don't drive your cars on a regular basis, those things don't really matter. Once again, it is just personal choice.

I have been on this forum for almost 15 years and have read a lot of stories. At car shows I have had numerous people tell me they had a midyear much like mine in the past. I also know of a few that sold their vintage corvette. Its seems in the end, all who have sold their midyears ended up regretting it.

One thing you also need to consider is, if you sell your C2 and then use the proceeds to buy a C8 you will pay tax on the Capital Gains, not at the rate normally paid on the sale of stocks and bonds, but at the “Collectables” rate (which I am confident is still 28% of your profit). Since you have owned the car so long, the tax will be substantial. If you trade the car to the dealer for the C8 and he sells it to your prospective purchaser you only owe the rate on any additional cash given to you (besides the C8). Uncle Sugar will be there for his! For What it’s worth, I’ve had a beautiful C8 flag me down in our city to look at my 64 coupe.

I did not care for the body style of the C4 ,when it came
out. I dont care for the C8 style, either. Sure, buy a new car
under warranity and your good to go. Your in deep ****,
when that runs out. The electronics in the new ones, is
super ,until you need ,to fix it, at your expense. I have a 23
year old car ,and ,try to find a ABS/Traction control moduel/
pump ,now? Used ones 2 to 3k, if you can find one. A C8
will be worse. I will stick to old technology. Either you drive
the car or it drives you.
Good luck

I have both a C2 and C8. I love them both for different reasons.

If I absolutely had to sell one, I'd sell the C8. The C2 is a timeless classic that takes me back in time whenever I drive (or just look at) it. The C8 will never spark those memories or feelings.

And, Keith's point is exactly right.
