OK, I was re-installing the RH lower ignition shielding on my wife’s 66 L79 roadster with power steering power brakes, and air conditioning…. And like many others may I add my frustration with trying to work around the AC on the right hand side of this engine bay! But to the point, I found this c-clip under the car. I don’t recall working on anything that had this kind of clip on it. Any ideas on where it belongs?
Small, and notice it’s not evenly round…
Thanks again to everybody for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience!
Yep, that’s a u-joint c-clip. If you crawl under your car, you’ll find either a front or back drive shaft universal joint missing a circlip OR one of your half-shaft axle joints missing one.
Likely not the clip you found, but there is a clip that looks exactly like the one in your picture that helps to hold the pinion gear in an AC Delco starter. We are rebuilding one and we had to remove this clip, which is why I remember it.
I have attached an exploded diagram so you see where it goes. It is on the right of the two items directly above the round black circle labels of 3,4, and 18. It is also slightly oblong as is the clip in your picture. Strange.
I’ve found c-clips like that securing the advance plate and cam to the distributor shaft in many distributors. Problem is I’ve worked on a lot of different makes distributors and I don’t recall specifically if Delco is one of them.
