The Tire Rack currently lists 48 different 215/70R-15 models with almost every imaginable sidewall styling, but most are hard compounds with low speed ratings - definitely not performance tires.

Heh Duke,
Yep was out to there Web site and looked around.. Even called the but not what you call performance tires there..
What would you suggest as the minimum speed rating for my Midyear. Not raced just cruzing and a littel turn here and turn there.
If I wasn't so hung up on getting a 1" white wall tire maybe it would be easier to find a good Hi Preformance tire. But I can't handel looking at a black wall tire sitting on a set of KO's.. :U

If you find a good "performance set" of white wall tires let me know. I have been looking for them for 10 years. I do not care the size of the whitewall as long as they have a whitewall.
PS Found the original ww tire in the spare tub. Can I sell it for $80,000 to a NCRS member.

What about some nice raised white letters? I still thing BFG's T/A radials are some of the best looking tires around and the performance isn't that bad either!

Tread lightly on those black wall 215-70-R15's my friend. Fred Flintstone ran hard compound wide whites.

I measured the original spare on my '64, a U.S. Royal safety 800, and the whitewall width is 13/16". I have Goodyear Integrity tires on three of my cars, 205/70, 215/70 and 225/70. They all have a 23/32" wide whitewall. Only 3/32" less then the originals.

This car has Goodyear Integrity 205/70s. They were on the car when I bought it. They say M+S on them (mud and snow?). I haven't drive the car enough to pass judgement on their handling, but I think they look nice for this particular car, which is not set up to emphasize aggression.

I agree that the wheels look best with the white walls, thought the Chevrolet brochure for the 66 Corvette has a car with yellow or gold looking striped tires. These look nice too.
Sine the picture I show were taken I've replaced the wheels show with bolton knockoffs that are closer to the proper color scheme for 66. They are painted dark gray between the spokes. Anybody want to buy my authentic knock offs, with about 300 miles on them?

The issue that bothers me about "S" rated tires is that they do not have nylon cap belt(s), which will prevent the tire from disintegrating if the steel belts separate. I've experienced internal tire failures at the track, but the tires remained in one piece and held air. I knew there was a problem from all the vibration. I even drove the 75 miles home from Riverside once with a big bulge in the tread an lots of vibration, because I had already used my spare.
As a rule, any tire rated "H" or above will have a nylon cap belt. Being as how I have a habit of taking advantage of opportunities to test top speed when they arise, I always buy the highest performance and highest speed ratied tire I can find in the size I am looking for, and I also prefer blackwalls.

Re: Ok...Who Has 215/70R/15 White Walls On There Midyear???? (Viet Nam Vett)
The Regatta 2 should be fine for normal driving. Like most 215/70R-15 tires its revs/mile spec is 775 which is the same at the OEM 7.75-15, so your speedo/odo accuracy will not be upset.
I do note that the UTQG rating is 560AB. A 560 tread wear rating is a very hard compound, which will not have high limits, and it may be a bit (to quote Rumsfeld ;) ) "untidy" in limit handing maneuvers, but should last 50 to 80K miles, so you might never have to replace them. The "B" is the temperature rating and a "B" is typical of "S" rated tires. H-rated and above typically carry an "A" rating. So as long as you don't plan on running at sustained triple digit speeds, a "B" rating is probably okay.
I would recommend 32 psi all around as a starting point for pressure. Since it is classified as a "touring tire" it should provide a decent ride.
For comparison, my pick for a 215/70R-15 is the Pirelli P4000 Super Touring. It carries a "W" speed rating (168 MPH) and a UTQG rating of 320AA. Of course, it's only available in blackwall styling. In the November '02 Car and Driver a vintage Maserati Ghibli was tested along with the new Maserati Coupe. The Ghibli was equipped with this very tire and pulled 0.85 g on the skid pad - a very impressive performance, which would place it into the lower end of the range of modern serious sports cars an sedans. With proper suspension tuning, it should do at least as well on a (lighter) Midyear Corvette.

Hey, Duke, how about this?
http://www.discounttire.com/dtc/find...odeIndex=33294
215/65 size, but my speedo's already off anyway. Looks like an inexpensive alternative to the P4000.
Later... Went to Tire Rack and saw the P4000's for $80 each. The Kumho's above are $68, so not much different.
Still, what's your take on 65 series vs. 70 series? Lots more performance, speed rated tires available.

Re: Ok...Who Has 215/70R/15 White Walls On There Midyear???? (SWCDuke)
The P4000 seems to have disappeared in 70 series! On the Pirelli website it isn't there, neither in Tire Rack. We may have to go to 65's to get some grip.
I noticed that 215/65/15's seem to be spec'd at 808 revs/mile, which is darn close to the 775 revs/mile of the OEM size for a '67.
