Default 63-64/65-70 differential front yoke differences

In replacing my u-joints this weekend I noticed that the rear drive shaft u-joints don't fit the front yoke of the differential, there is 1/8" to 1/4" gap between the ouside of the u-joint cap and the inside of the diff yoke tang, leading me to believe that the diff yoke has been replaced. Looking at catalogs, the 63-64 yoke is not available where the 65-70 yoke is. Does anyone know the difference between the two, and what is involved in replacement?

Thanks

Yup, yokes are different - the '63-'64 pinion had 17 splines, and the '65-up pinion had 30 splines and a larger yoke. There are "conversion U-joints" available that have two sizes of trunnions/caps on them that will adapt your prop shaft yoke to your pinion yoke.

John,
Thanks for the reply. Any idea where I can get the conversion u-joints? Also what would have been involved in changing to the 30 spline yoke?

Either the ring and pinion were changed in the '63-'64 carrier or the entire unit was changed. To change back, you would need to find and replace the pinion and yoke back to the course spline. Any good parts store will have a "mechanic's u-joint" to fit your current set-up. And, a good parts man will immediately know what you're talking about.

Changing to the later 30-spline yoke requires a new ring and pinion gearset to match the spline count on the yoke.
