Default 1964 327/365hp 4 spd - what should the timing be set at?

I have a service manual for the car but either the spec section is missing.. or i'm just a maroon - but i can't find the timing spec anywhere.. The sticker on teh car is long gone..

does anyone positivly know what the timing should be set at? 1964 327/365hp 4 speed.. no a/c no p/s

The initial timing spec should be in your owner's manual; your engine uses the 1111069 distributor, which has internal centrifugal advance of 24 degrees at 2350 rpm - this calls for initial (base) timing (distributor vacuum disconnected and plugged) of 10 degrees at the lowest obtainable idle rpm, so your total timing (initial plus centrifugal, vac advance disconnected) is 34 degrees above 2500 rpm. Connecting your vacuum advance unit will add 16 degrees at idle, so you should show 26 degrees at 800-900 rpm idle. Use a dial-back timing light to verify that the above specs are being met. :thumbs:

Corvette News says the range is 10-14. Run as high as you can as long as there is no detonation.

You have to be VERY CAREFUL to make sure that you set timing as a speed that is below where the engine normally idles. On your engine the centrifugal starts at 700, but a 900 idle is required for acceptable idle quality and stability.

When you disconnect the vacuum advance to set initial timing the revs will drop a couple of hundred. Increase the revs slightly while observing the tab with a timing light. If the timing immediately advances the centrifugal has already started and you need to reduce the speed more.

Alternatively, set the total WOT timing at 34-38. With the vacuum can disconnected rev the engine until the timing no longer advances which should be over 2350 on your engine. Use a dial back timing light or an accurate 30 degree mark on the balancer and the tab.

Once the timing is set reconnect the vacuum can and check total idle timing. It should be near 30 degrees at 900, maybe a little more because the centrifugal adds a couple of degrees at 900.

John and Duke have it 100% right. I want to reinforce what John said about verifying that the advance curve is what it's supposed to be. We're talking about a 39 year old car and there is a possibility that it's distributor may not still have the same specs as original.
