1966-Where to add front speakers ?
Hey guys, I just installed a new stereo (Kenwood replacement fit) and amp and (2) 6 X 9's in the rear compartment, but could not find anywhere to add front speakers. The top center grill had sheet metal under it. So, where do you guys with radios add front speakers? I am now thinking kickpanels, but is there anyway to add them under that perforated grill top center of the dash?

add speakers? well, you could put "modern" speakers in place of the original, that's what i did, (saving/storing the original speaker and radio). Then get another set of repo kickpanels and cut them up to put speakers in them, but i sure wouldn't cut up the original kick paneks, or any other part of the car just for the sake of extra speakers.

I just installed a new speaker and CD system in my 66 this summer, took me an afternoon and 3 beers.
The original speaker is up front and under the grill in the center of the dash. You need to take off the radio side panels and loosen the nuts from the underside, then the mesh screen lifts right out. Then you can access the speaker area quite easily. Also, the speaker I put in is actually two speakers in one unit. I opted for this, (gives me dual speaker sound) but I didn't compromise my kick panels, vents, doors, etc. or any other place to mount speakers.
I'm not familiar with the sheet metal under the grill your describing. Was this something someone put in, or was your car a radio delete and this is how they filled the void where the speaker would sit??

You can get a duel cone speaker that will do a great job with plenty of power. for about $100. I liked mine and miss it, I returned it back to stock.

What size speaker fits under the stock grill?.............6x9....or?....I guess I'm not as into music as others are here. because if it does not look stock I'm not interested in it.

I put a set of sony 40 watt speakers in each headrest and a set of Kraco 75 watt just behing the convertible top action covers.
Front speakers? We don't need no stinking front speakers!  :lolg:
I removed the 66 speker grille and put a 300watt booster reverb there. You can see it on the Details web page linked off my homepage (listed below).

That is what I think. The mesh grill is riveted, no screwed down and there is a metal plate that looks very original in the space under the mesh. Also, my car is an A/C car and the vent is right in front and below the mesh screen. Any suggestions?
Corvette Central sells kick panel speakers.
If I were to replace my original radio, I don't think stereo would sound good with both speakers in the center of the dash, so I would use two kick panel speakers to give the stereo sound some separation.
These would be easy to put back to original, if needed.

Custom AutoSound (Anaheim CA) sells a dual voice coil 6x9 that fits under the original grill... providing you don't have an a/c car. Both channels share the 6x9, but each gets its own voice coil. I put one in my '64 and two small tweeter boxes sit on the dash on either side of the grill. Bass suffers because this is not a sealed cabinet. For some nice bass, 8" 3-way JBLs now fill the rear wells.
The dask speaker grill has threaded rivets. These are spot welded to the grill and "speed nuts" cinch it from the bottom. These are a bear to remove, but taking out the glove box insert gives access to these nuts. I remember one was still removed from the bottom and required a looooong extension and socket. I put a 4-channel JBL amp under the passenger seat by raising it with a piece of 2"x2" wood painted black. This also helps my wife see out of the car.

I'm not sure how the kick plates are set up on a 66 but on my 62 I removed the kick plates and mounted 6x9 speakers just above the top of and behind the kick plates. With the kick plates replaced you can't tell the speakers are there but the sound is good. I also replaced the original speaker with a dual cone.

A good idea to get to the speednuts holding the grille in the center console is to additionaly remove the glove box.....makes it a lot handier !

Go with the kickpanels. The ones I saw looked to have cheap speakers in em just replace them when you blow them in short order. Or test your fiberglassing skills and just make them yourself for 50 bucks and a some of your time. Dave..

I got the kickpanel speakers from custom autosound & the are chintzy rip/off speakers poor sound ( my side exhaust overpowers them) but the housing looks & fits ok, made of molded plastic, when I get to it will replace with quality peakers...... :nopity :seeya :flag

I
have a 200 Watt amp in the tool compartment and a 150 watt kenwood cd player that rests between the seats with a remote control. 2 6x9's behind the seats and I can vibrate the car if I want. I also have an antique suit case with 2 high end 6x9's cut in on the sides and hook that to the luggage rack ( route 66 style) and blast Dinah Shores " See the USA in a Chevrolet" along with some beach boys. I saw a video of a parade I was in and you could hear me 3 blocks away :smash: Its fun to see the women and kids get up and start dancing to " Help me Rhonda" and the older ones smiling at hearing the Chevy song.

On mine, I cut out a piece of 3/4" particle board to the dimensions of the jack panel and mounted the speakers in that. Even though the speakers have their provided 8" grills, I then made a cover with grill that covers the whole shebang to protect them against "shifting cargo."

Mike
I bought 2 fabric covered partical board boxes from Cartoys for 15 or 20 bucks each and when I need the room I unplug them and pull them out, they sit on the each side of the tool compartment cover facing up.
