Default just bought a 1960 vette, but need to trailer it....need some advice...

Just bought a 1960 Vette...but I have to go get it.....I have a 2000 Blazer ZR2 with a trailer hitch....it can tow up to 5000 pounds and take a tongue weight of 500 pounds....I know it all depends on how you load the trailer....I need some advice/experience on loading a vette on a trailer and getting balanced properly.

I have to drive from Baltimore to Toledo, Ohio.....hopefully this will take place next weekend, so need those comments sooner than later....

thanks...Herb

I towed my 65 coupe from Atlanta to Charlotte about a year and a half ago. It was my first experience with towing a car. I am used to a trailer though, so backing up and manuevering the trailer was no problem. I rented one of the UHaul car trailers. With the limited length of the trailer, there's not much of an option as to where to place it. With the tandem wheels on the trailer, the load distribution to the tongue shouldn't be too much of an issue. I towed using a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee rated for 6500 pounds towing. UHaul states that you can't tow more than 80% of your vehicles weight. They didn't ask in my case though, which was good since I exceeded their rule, but did not exceed my towing capacity. My car weighs about 3500 pounds and the trailers weigh about 2000 pounds. I would think your car would weigh about the same, so you may be at the limit for towing with your vehicle if you're renting a trailer. Good Luck.

Don't cover it while towing it on an open trailer. Flapping covers strip paint. Good luck and congratulations on your acquisition.

I went to the UHaul site.....bottom line, they didnt like my Blazer for towing....said it wasnt big enough.....the car weighs 3000, but their trailer weighs 2000 pounds...YIKES....I will probably end up buying a trailer that weighs around 1000-1500 pounds....with electric brakes....the Blazer owners manual says the the 4WD, automatic trans can tow 5000 pounds with 500 pound tongue weight.....so I am right at the limit....need a trailer that is on a diet...

my experience with UHaul trailers is that they are built like a tank...and weight a ton.....

If you are renting a Uhaul for a one way tow, make sure you know what size ball you will need and make sure your vehicles electrical connection is the same as the trailer. Also be sure to check the trailer thoroughly before you drive off. I picked up one in Ohio a few years ago that had two flat tires. I think all the Uhauls use a web type tie down that fits over the front tires, works pretty well, but check it after a few miles to be sure it has not loosened. Also, if using an open trailer, DO NOT put a car cover on the car being trailered.

thanks for the suggestions...my trailer hitch was installed at UHaul...and the eletrical connection/plug matches up with UHaul and my little trailer for the garden tractor....

I have heard that car covers are the kiss of death for paint jobs for cars on trailers.....thanks for the reminder....

I would be a little hesitant to tow with a blazer. You are going to max out that V-6 going up down the hills in PA or WV depending on which way you go. I would find a buddy with V-8 powered truck if you could. I would definitely get a trailer with brakes, it will make a big difference in the hills. I have towed a car on trailer with and without brakes and when you don't have trailer brakes you are basically along for the ride when you go down hill. Not a whole lot of fun, but it does make your pulse rise.

If you are going to buy a trailer, then get one that does what you want, not one that just meets the minimums. You may pay extra, but you will be happier in the end.

Wish I had known you needed a transport, I just came from Richmond, Va this weekend and I have a suburban.

Good luck, you may want to consider renting the truck and trailer from U-Haul also or have it shipped.

Tow in Drive, not OD and stay around 55-60 and you should be OK. Don’t expect too much on hills.

Plan your stops, and don’t remotely tailgate anyone.

Good luck.

PROVETTE.....sent you a IM, hopefully you got it....my cell phone number is 440-478-5666

let me know....sounds like the right thing to do.....doesn't sound like the Blazer has the muscle to really do the job.

thanks, Herb Turner

It sounds like your deal with provette is the way to go. But, I towed my 61 from South TN to N. Virginia with a tow-dolly and towed my 60 from S. Maryland to N. Virginia. Tow dollys work great with the C1 corvettes, no problem.

I live in Northern Virginia and will be going to Carlisle on Friday. I have a 1994 Trailex aluminum 16' open car trailer, full deck I could sell. The unit weighs 750 lbs total. Double axle, trailer breaks ect.

Trailex are made in Canfield OH.

But, tow dollys work super and they are cheep to rent or buy.

Best of luck.

I towed a friends Avanti (wgt. in the 3600 pound area) on a U-Haul trailer with my S-10 Blazer. This was on flat land. Never again! Blazer had one hard time with it, and was being pushed more by the towee, than pulled by the tower. Would not want to ever try that through the "hills" of Penn.

And I used the Blazer all the time with my 23 foot boat, with no problems (actually towed so well, that you did not know it was back there!).

A few 1000 pounds makes a lot of difference!

And I agree that the U-Haul trailers are built to tow tanks!

here in southern calif, most all the independents and I'm pretty sure Uhaul won't even hook you up with a car trailer unless you have a 3/4 ton rated vehicle, something about liability
