Could be a worn rear leaf spring. I had the same problem on my 66, when I replaced the rear spring it was solved.

With the car safely suspended and the wheels hanging freely, grasp the tire at 6 and 12 o'clock. Try tilting the tire by pushing then pulling from those two positions. If your splined shaft going into the differential is severly worn, you will get a fair amount of difference if the wear isn't the same on both sides. I heard heard of shafts so worn that the groove for the C clip is ground down. I have only seen this one other time when the guy who was rebuilding my differential showed me a set that was severly worn.

I'd start by measuring the length of the bolts holding the spring tips to the trailing arms to make sure they are both the same. Also check the condition of the rubber under the washers on the ends of these bolts. If the cushion is gone on the left side or that bolt is longer, it will allow this condition.

good luck,
tc

I been thinking about this for a little while and can't come up with anything other than what Gary says.. May not be the answer but could be.. The bolts look the same and the cushions don't look very bad.

I guess that you could have lost the shims for the trailing arm that might allow it to slide out ward and allow this... Post some more pics of the assy from under the car so maybe we can get a better look at it.. Dave..

tried yanking on the tires and there is a lot more play on the drivers side. i don't know if that is a symptom or the root cause. i'll get under it tommorow night.

I would say it's either a worn splined axle as Gary stated, worn out strut rod bushings, or a combination of both of those things with possibly some worn out spring bushings thrown in for good measure.

Check the "eyes" of the left strut rod carefully.....I have seen a boken one that got a carck on the upside and was about to break fully...

...looked very much the same !

Not an expert here....But I do know that the Side yoke in the diff is held in place internally by a Cir-Clip around the circumference of the yoke.

It looks like the clip broke. As the rear wheel moves up and down thru its travels... force is excerted in on the yoke as well as out when the wheel moves down.

Also..when my rear was rebuilt by Bairs..there was a sheet enclosed with the rear that cautioned about using the proper shock length.

The center hole to center hole of the shock when fully extened should not be more the 14"..!!! Or the waranty would be voided..

I'm sure the experts will jump in here to add and or correct the above.

Gentelman...Please...

Time for the diff to come out; the inner end of the stub axle has worn through its case-hardening against the pinion shaft, all the way to the retaining clip groove, and the clip is gone (the other side will follow shortly). You'll probably need two new stub axles. Good time to rebuild the diff completely while it's out (bearings, seals, etc.).

I'll be damned, looks like someone put it together without the clip. there is no evidnce of one ever being there. no ground up metal. nothing. has a set of nice new looking richmond gears in there.

Your side yoke looks fine. Just replace the clip and that should solve your problem

I had the same missing clip as you did. I was told that when removing the rear from the cover (cover and cross member stay
on the car) it was easier to get it back with the axle stub out.
