So I got it to idle, a tad high, even when warm, which is ok. Sounds awesome. Moves forward and moves backwards as well.
Then I noticed a coolant leak on my t'stat spacer. The plug i added wasn't sealed properly. So I drained a gallon out, resealed the plug and that fixed it.
Then restarted, it seems a bit finicky at times trying to start. Started it up, back to operating temp, good oil, good fuel pressure, etc.
Then I noticed an oil leak. The gasket on the oil filter canister was leaking (happened before when I filled it). So now I'll have to removed housing, make a real gasket, and try again. The supplied ones suck, way too thin. I may have to put a spin on filter. I do not want this to fail a 3rd time!
Unless originality is important to you, you should convert to a spin on. A lot less issues to deal with.
Hi Mark.
Not important at all. I thought it would not be an issue for the first oil change on the new engine. I'll try one more time, and then go from there.
The biggest challenge with the old cartridge type filters was making sure you got the old Oring/ gasket out, on top of making sure who was there before you got the old gasket out when they did an oil change .. Best way to be sure was after you have removed the cartridge and filter was to remove the two bolts up into the block and then you can remove the inside piece the gasket/oring fits around... Its pretty easy and there is no guess work then... Clean it up, reattach it with the two bolts and install a new O ring...... At least thats how I used to do it a long time ago....
Bad news. Driver's side head gasket is toast. Burning oil internally and leaks some oil externally. After my business trip this week, I'll get with the builder to get her back running. Sometimes, things just go sideways.
The 64 goes back to the builder this weekend. I'm glad I left the hood off!
I did install a new temp sender and temp gauge. It wasn't bad work since I've pulled it back just enough to chamge the gauge out. The 1/4-20 x 14" all-thread has been very useful for all of the dash work I've done. It took only 1 hour to change the gauge and only few curse words.
I have never seen a new leaking head gasket? If overheated they will certainly leak? I don't think yours was overheated at all so this has me very curious. Let us know what you find on this please. I hope it is something simple.
Standard head gaskets do not seal coolant well till after one heat cycle, but yours is leaking Oil?
