Default What are the numbers please???????

Block casting number??........casting date???..........head number??????
Front pad number and date??

Why soo much $$$$ ? It is only a 283 that went into every V-8 Chevrolet made in 1958. If it has the original fuel njection unit, or 2x4 carbs I could understand the high asking price, but please give some explanation.

I have a 58 that was built on Feb 14,1958 and need a complete motor dated Jan 30 thru Feb 7, 1958.........That is why I am asking.

I'm sure the guy will go down on the price. I'm assuming that is why he asked me to say Price Negotiable. His contact info is as follows:

If you cannot make the call let me know and I'll find out everything you need to know. Just curious, how much is a motor like that worth? Thanks

I have a March, 58 car that I need a motor for too. And I agree, why is the motor several times more than the value?

One more stupid question... what does "numbers match the motor" mean? They match what? Its not in a car, right?

I spoke with Ralph about the motor. He stated that the motor was complete with the original block GM3858174 ( this number is found on the back side of the block. As for the price, he emphasized the price being negotiable, but he did state, they don't make motors for 58's anymore (collector's item maybe, I'm not sure)

If you have any further questions, Ralph can better assist you. Please feel free to contact Ralph at

Tell Ralph that while they may not be making '58 motors anymore, that number block came out of a 64-66 truck last time I looked.

That isn't a Corvette block. Check out the NCRS Driveline ads if you're a member. I've seen correct blocks for a 58 go for as little as $300 and complete motors for less than $1000.

The 3858174 block was a 327, not a 283, and had many passenger car and truck usages from '64-'67, and was the only block used for '66 Corvette 327/300 and 327/350 applications. The only thing that would make it a "Corvette motor" would be an original 1966 Corvette engine assembly and suffix code stamp and a 1966 Corvette VIN derivative; otherwise, it's just one of hundreds of thousands of ordinary car or truck 327's.

Default To expensive

I am also looking for a correct motor for my 1958. I have a line on a complete motor for $1200.00 but I need to do a little more research. If any body has a 283 let me know. Thanks Greg

Default 1966 3858174

I'd be interested in this 3858174 enigine depending on the casting date and the stamped number. Prefer you post the info here rather than spending my long distance nickles on a possible wild goose chase seeing that Ralph has been a little off on the year description so far.

I asked Ralph about the casting date and stamped number. The guy he got the engine from knows all the information you need. Ralph described an area on the motor that had dottes around it like a clock. There was an arrow that pointed to a particular dot, but he wasn't sure how to interpret this, anyway, if there is a place to reach you, Ralph can contact you so that you don't waste your long distance minutes figuring out if this is a wild goose chase or not...............
for now I am waiting to hear from ralph about the casting date and stamped number.................................. ..................
