Default Halibrand wheels

Looking to buy a set of original Halibrand KO wheels for a 57 Vette in the style of the 56 Sebring racer. Would consider a magnesium set of repro wheels as well.

Thanks for the reply. Are these magnesium? Is the set complete? That is, does it have everything needed to mount on my car? Do you know the size? Will they fit a 57 Vette without alteration?

These are aluminum.......................the set is complete and brand new, never used. Wheels are 15x6 and yes they will fit your car with no modifications. Price is $2500 +$150 shipping. PSE (Phil Schmidt Engineering) made some of the nicest wheels anywhere but Phil is now retired. I bought these for my 64 Corvette but never used them.

Thanks for your interest.

IF you REALLY have your heart set on magnesium Halibrand wheels, there is a guy in Indiana who has a set for sale for $80K.........................yes, I said $80,000. Includes 4 wheels, spinners, adapters, hubs axles and bearings. He's had them for several years.

What are the problems with magnesium wheels? I have heard people say they can be a problem but never heard what they meant. Also heard other people say those people didn't know what they were talking about. I have never had a set and so never had any experience with them.

Like the look of those PSE wheels though.

Magnesium, although very light weight, is also very porous and very hygroscopic, meaning it tends to absorb moisture from any source, including the air unless properly treated and that is no guarantee against moisture absorption. With that said, moisture is magnesium's worst enemy and over time it causes the magnesium to deteriorate and it becomes brittle. The other reason some people don't like magnesium is that even though it can be polished to a mirror like finish, it quickly darkens and requires constant maintenance and polishing.

Don't get me wrong.............................I'm not trying to discourage you from getting magnesium wheels if that is truly what you want.

Thanks,
Rex

Well, I'll just go ahead and say that $80,000 is not in the budget! Not even close. I have seen them for a lot,lot less (less than half that) but that was ten years ago.

Thanks for the input guys.

At the risk of sounding biased, I will say that I had 2 other sets of PSE wheels on other cars and they were probably the best wheels I've ever owned. So with that said, I hope others will comment also. I know other forum members have owned Phil's wheels.

Thanks,
Rex

Magnesium wheels if they are coated properly are o-k. The last 3 formula cars I have had used em. The material is soft and bends very easy, any even light contact with another car bent them . I tried to polish a set and that was a big mistake within a couple weeks they were dull. There are special coatings for them, then you can paint over that. That's my experience with them.
