Took the cover of my old rear end off....
... to check out the condition.. I thought that the differential was shot.. but to my surprise, there was no indication of any problem with the unit.. No shaved off ring teeth and the spider gears look ok from what I can see.. There also were no shavings in the oil and no cracks in the case...
I thought that the unit was shot after it appeared to locked up a couple of times for a fraction of a second one day... That's when I decided to pull my old engine and wait for my new one... When I got the new engine, I drove around, taking it very easy because I thought that the differential was shot....
Very strange.. I have no idea what could've caused those issues.. They only occured one day and never before or after...

wow...wish mine looked like that. I pulled it apart a few weeks ago and found "mud" inside. I'm pretty sure it's never been apart since 1972. It took a lot of effort to clean it out.

GS, you have a muncie?? sometimes the factory shift linkage will allow the tranny to get into two gears at once, and it's locked up of course at that time, pop the clutch and engine dies instantly, feels for all the world like a locked up rear....
my '72 did that to me once on a drive, and all I had to do was wiggle the linkage, or tap it lightly with a hammer, and free it up, sometimes just playing with the shift lever can free it up again.....apparently it's not uncommon, as the Vette shop owner knew immediately what problems were....

Gene, I had a TKO and I'm sure that the problem wasn't tranny related because the issue also occured when I let the car roll in neutral...
