68 owners I need some advice
My father owns a all original 68 vert 4sp 390hp bb. He is wanting to add a luggage rack to spice it up a bit, was the racks dealer installed or factory? we don't want to hurt the value of this car at all but we like the look of the rack on it.
we also plan to install the chrome gill inserts to dress it up even a bit more and MAYBE the passenger side mirror.
just wanting to know if they were dealer installed or not he says all that was but I want to make sure.
also where is the best place to order these parts we don't want some cheapo luggage rack that isn't like the real ones we want it just like what the dealer would have put on.
thanks!

1977 was the only year where that type of chrome luggage rack was a "factory" option. All others were a "dealer installed" option.

Gdaina is right, '69 only for the gill inserts, but you can certainly install them in a '68 and I've seen some with them. Any of the Corvette parts vendors can give you correct repro racks in both chrome (original) and stainless--you might try some of the vendors on the bar to the left of your screen on the main forum page. Once you've put the rack on, there's no easy going back, as you'll have to drill holes through your back deck. I like the rack, myself, and find it useful for carting around folding chairs and a cooler.

thanks for the feedback I found one on ecklers we will probably get.
and i know the inserts were a 69 item but I think it will dress up this 68 some it's about the same car I see now harm in adding them.
thanks

Hi
I don't think the fender inserts will harm the value of your car, nor does the luggage rack.
I also installed a rack just a couple of year ago and I can tell you, drilling the first hole inot the perfect deck brings some tears in your eyes.
I also have the Stingray emblems on the fenders and would do this again.

Value is determined by the buyer...
A Rack would DE-crease value in a '68, IMO.
Conversely, fender-vent inserts and passenger mirror (If installed correctly) would IN-crease value.
If you don't intend to sell, what difference does it make?

REALLY!!!! Luggage racks may look cute on Richie Cunningham's Hudson , but it looks like crap on my 68 Corvette roadster. Mine had one too and I actually got the seller to lower the price because of it. That thing was off 10 minutes after I got mine home too. If they can't fit a bikini and towel behind the seat then I just guess she's not going.
The louver trim was a $21.10 option in 69, of which less than 1/3 were ordered.
