Default I'm thinking of blacking out my exhaust

Since I have done a complete front and rear end resto on the 69, as the General made it, I am considering blacking out the exhaust. Has anyone done this? I have looked in the 68 - 82 resoration guide and there was no mention as to the amount (muffler only, some pipe) blacked out or the finish (flat vs matte). Anyone with pictures?? Thanks.

You can safely use Krylon flat black to do this. I would suggest getting a piece of cardboard to block out overspray on your car. As I understand it. the GM workers were fairly sloppy in their application of blackout. I have seen a few photos of original exhaust systems and the black out is only enough to cover the muffler so that it appears blacked out from the rear. It is not a full or even total coverage. I did this and it literally took about two minutes per muffler. Any longer and you aren't sloppy enough for GM.

My personal preference is for a blacked out exhaust showing only the exhaust tips.

And make sure you randomly overspray just a little, as a GM worker would.

Since I don't have the spare tire carrier and my rear is modified a bit I can run the exhaust up high enough so that the mufflers are nicely tucked up into the body. But GM wanted them to hang down, in sight so they have to be that way.

Mark, can you post before and after pics? Let us know how it goes.

It just dawned on me - that's why my spare has paint on it.

Sometimes it takes me a while.

Will do. I have been taking lots of photos and will put some up when I'm done.
