Default Chambered exhaust

Whether it's too loud or not is a personal preference, however, I can tell you that the motor makes a difference. I'm talking small blocks, my 383 and L48. Granted, the L48 has 33 less cubes, but it is WAY quieter, even with the same carb, air cleaner and headers. Way less compression too, maybe that's the difference.

I considered the chambered too loud behind the 383, but just right with the L48.

I'm about to change my exhaust. Stock 350, anemic 195hp.

I want the car to rumble, but I don't want it to give me a headache after driving around for awhile.

Chambered or no?

I get some interior resonance at around 1300 rpm. Anything above or below that isn't bad, especally while cruising. WOT is loud, but nothing like the 383.

Which system do you have? Walker (MAD), or Allen's (Ecklers')?

here's a link to a movie I made when I first put the 383 in the car. I blipped the throttle to 1400 a few times because it was stone cold. I also didn't have the timing or jetting dialed in yet as you can tell from the backfire

I'll try to make another move with the car in the same place now that the L48 is back in it.http://home.swfla.rr.com/woot/images/Movie.wmv

So...will chambered be bearable on my stock SB? I don't want to make the car un-usable for dates & beach cruising.

I think so. I had them on my base motor, bone stock '70 and the sound was great. Nice rumble at idle, a real head turner at WOT and quiet enough at speed that you can have a conversation.

Being married, I consider the chambered loudness an asset. Only time I got a break from her

I had them on my SB running thru stock manifolds and they aren't nearly as loud as the '69 fact side exhaust on my BB. With it idling and standing along side the door, you have to shout to be heard. Rolling thunder for sure, I just keep saying "Wa? Wa?" and put my hand to my ear. Must be the cam. Thanks Mountainmotor.

I'm running mine through headers too. The L48 sounds nice and you don't notice that resonance I mentioned with the windows down or in your case the top. My wife thought it was too loud with the 383, but likes it with the L48.

I put the Allen's system on my warmed-over 300 hp 350. I'm firing it up for the first time this Saturday. I don't imagine it will be too obnoxious. My neighbors may disagree after I break in the cam.

How loud is too loud? It all about personal preference. Chambered exhaust in my opinion is boderline. Some will think it's too loud and others will find it just right. I can asure you that you will not come home at 2am and not wake the wife.
With my L-48 I think it's just right. The 383 will soon be going in and I may have a change in my opinion.

Hey Len ..

I told ya it was gonna be loud

Personally I can't believe that those pipes came that loud from Walker.
I always thought that the driver's side pipe was louder than the passenger's side.

Sorry for busting in the middle of the thread.

I like them Bill. People hear me coming and get outa the way.

My teenage daughters are always remarking about the Vette now that it has a BB and the side exhaust. I took it as a major compliment when the oldest remarked "Now that's what a Corvette should sound like."

I've got a slightly warmed over L-48. 268h cam, performer manifold, Dynomax Headers & MAD chambered exhaust.
I love the sound. At idle it has a deep rumble note. At cruise you can have a conversation in the cabin and even listen to the crappy stock radio.
At WOT all hell breaks loose. This exhaust will turn heads!
I have never received anything but positive comments on the exhaust sound.

Stewart
