No not a clutch it is the teeth inside the transmission. You might need a rebuild or some new gears. Adjust the linkage first and see if that works. If not you might be in for a tranny rebuild. I put in a couple of gears in my Muncie for that same problem. I now run a Tremec. They should not pop out of gear.

My four speed never popped out of gear. I have no idea how many miles were on it but never had a problem with that. It did have a slight whine in first gear when I was getting on it a little.

Most common cause is worn sliders and/or forks. The forks (one for 1-2 and one for 3-4) can be replaced with the tranny in the car by taking the side cover off. The sliders require the tranny be removed from the car and disassembled. If you're taking it down that far it would be foolish not to put a rebuild kit in it. New synchros, bearings, seals and counter shaft.
My M20 liked to pop out of 3rd, not 1st. Whacked my hand good a few times. I had recently done the standard rebuild kit but it doesn't include sliders and forks. Replaced those and it didn't pop out of gear anymore. A few months after that I put a tremec in it.

Mine popped out of first quite a bit until I had the tranny rebuilt. I had all the syncros replaced and had to replace 1st and 2nd gears, they were badly chipped. I guess the last bubba was into power shifting. Since the rebuild, no popping whatsoever!
