200 miles from home in my 73
Drove my 73 almost 200 miles from home yesterday without a glitch. I was nervous about the trip since I had never been over 25 miles from home in this car. Except for the wind noise, (convertible) you would not have thought you were in a 32 year old car. Anyway, I just wanted to share my joy of my 73. I love this car!

How was it without having cruise-control... and not having an overdrive gear to cruise with?

Glad you had an excellent trip! I'd love to take my '73 to our reunion in August, which would be about 1000 round trip. But I haven't made up my mind yet. My concerns are heat, gas mileage, and break-down. I do have AAA now, just incase.

I am thinking of bringing my 70 up to BG for the cruise in. If you remember, I had it over at West Chevrolet in Knoxville. As long as the weather holds out and I don't have to run with the top up, I am happy with it.
BTW, this would be the longest trip taken in my vette also. I have made a day trip over 200 miles last August over the Cherahola Skyway and up the Dragon.

I recently drove my 73 convertible 240 miles on the interstate with no problems. Great trip! I was smiling the entire way. I had lots of waves and honks from people who pulled up beside me. I drove 65-70 mph the entire way.

We regularly drive our 82 on 200 to 400 mile cruises, (we start out every trip with the drive up to Phoenix 80+miles each way to meet up with the rest of the gang).
AC on, 22+mpg, and with the nutz in our group we usually get to cruise into the triple digits just to keep up...
I run to Phoenix during the summer (110+ temps) every summer without any overheating AC on.
Yeah, mine isn't as old as most of them on here, but I still have to keep things in top shape to do this stuff... Get out there and cruise these things, or they will die...

Safety Car
My 73 has made it to Bowling Green and back with a couple of side trips to Evansville In. and so far without any real issues. Last years trip was by far the best since I rebuilt the motor and added the 200-4R OD trans. With the 3.55 rear gear I was lucky to see 11mpg with the TH400, now I get around 17mpg. Hope to see some of you Labor Day Weekend again this year.

I have a 1973 also..I've owned it since May 2001...exactly fours years give or take a few days. Since owning this car I have never driven it more than 10 miles from home and less than 25 miles at any one time. About 1000 miles total. I have a cell phone now and I'm thinking about AAA road service. It's an old car...things have been fixed on it but without a total restoration...how can you trust a 32 year old car ? Maybe I'm paranoid but I see a lot of new cars than mine broken down all the time.

Drove home too!
I was planning on driving out to BG and trailering back. (had wife driving the dually with car hauler behind) I got up this morning to a beautiful 54 degree sunny Sunday in the heart of Corvette city. Trailer...... I don't need no stinkin' trailer.....Had a great drive home carrying my pretty blue TOP FLIGHT ribbon beside me! Great weekend besides losing my original rag top to the hail storm.

I have a 73 also and id drive it anywhere! the more you drive it the more bugs you get out and the better you know your car. At least thats what I have found in my vette ownership.
