Why do so many people use the bolts to slide the transmission on, if it doesn't slide on by hand, go back and check what's keeping the whole deal from sliding together.

You can easily have the broken piece welded back on.

Nahhh....a 5 pound hammer is better than using the bolts to pull it on

Yes, it can be put back.

How is the torque converter? It wasn't completely installed?

You're right, this was my first time doing the motor/trans together. The motor was on the hook and the trans was on a cart. I was doing the alignment, one son was positioning the trans and the other was working the hoist. I WAS looking to see what was the holdup but I guess I wasn't too successful in finding it...until after the fact.

Turns out it was the converter not COMPLETELY seated. It's a 9.5" billet front cover converter. It seated on the slots but apparently not fully on the shaft. It may have to be honed. I've read where some aftermarket converters are a VERY tight fit on the shaft. If I had measured the distance from the pad to the face of the trans I would have realized I didn't have the recommended 1 1/8". I guess sometimes we all get a little anxious and end up with a story to tell.

I also had a hard time getting the converter to slide in completely.. I thought I had it, but tranny and engine wouldn't mate, so I played around and finally got the converter completely seated...

After you got it seated did you have any endplay? Art Carr's instructions say about 1/8" endplay after it's seated. I could get it fully seated with some extra persuasion but it would be so tight on the shaft there would be no endplay AND I'd probably never be able to get it off again.

I had about a 1/8 " play on mine.. However, my tranny is a TH200R4 and not a 700R4..
