Sting Ray = 1963-1967

Stingray = 1969-1976, but a lot of people consider the C3's without the Stingray badges (1968, 1977-1982) are still a Stingray

Designers wanted to differenciate between the 67 and 68 body styles so they left off the Sting Ray name. There was such a ruckus from the corvette faithful, that they brought the name back in 69, but as one word Stingray.

Thanks! That was what I was wanting to figure out. '68 did not have either Stingray or Sting Ray on the fenders. I think I'll use that as our trivia question at my clubs next meeting.

STINGRAY refers to the body design.
http://ganeys.home.sprynet.com/STINGRAY.htm
63-67 & 68-77
Since 63, for 15 years Corvette & Sting Ray were synonymous.

Some consider 78- C3 also.
78- 25th anniversay of the Corvette- not Stingray. They were already working on the C4 & McLellan had said the styling would be reeled in. 84 induction & 700R4 were in production in 81. So the focus was on the C4.

The '68 was refered to in Chevy Lit and Ads as the Corvette Sting Ray No badges but Chevy called it a Sting Ray.

Yes. Normally prod. starts the year before the model year. So correct as is.

This thread is about as good as the "What year is it"? "Is it a Stingray"? threads.

Production for 1982 would have started in August or September 2001. Ganey, as always is correct. Rod

That's been standard practice for a long time. My '77 was built in early September 1976. The '65 Mustang I used to drive was built in (I think) August 1965, just before the switch to '66 production.

... had to read this four times to realize it was just a typo ... 81.

Boy, an 82 built in 2001 would be in really nice shape.

As long as we are on crazy questions, thought I might ask one (Not trying to hijack this thread). The C1,2,and 3 crossed flags logo has the checkered flag to the right, and the red flag (with the 3 bars for each of the Chevrolet brothers and the fleur-di-li for France) on the left. Starting with the C4's the flags were reversed and have remained that way until now. Nobody at the museum could tell me the reason why they were switched, does anyone have a clue?
