Since my dad passed and his shop is no longer available to me if my 454 is bad I will be some what in your boat asking what to do, some cats have trucks and lifts and shops that they really can pull an engine buy the parts and reassemble and do it cheaper than a so called crate or mail or engine, I wouldn't be able to, in addition I have had such bad luck with shops and techs geez, I would likely have to buy a crate engine.

In addition, you might need a better radiator, my old stock one really didn't cool my 383 well but did cool the 454, if you go electric fans you need a better alt, little things add up

keep the original original and store it if you ever want to go back to stock and get you a new short block

Local auto repair shops to me want ~$1500 to R&R and engine. That's remove old engine, install new engine and attach exhaust. Everything else I would do, hook up fuel system, electrical, cooling etc.
