Default Broke in new 280 magnum Comp Cam

Took a crate 350 4 bolt main, added a comp 280 magnum cam, my WP Sportsman 64 cc heads, RPM intake, HEI w/Lars tune up kit, and headers.
Didn't fire away and I was concerned about wiping the lube off the cam and wrecking the cam.FIxed the ignition, fired right up, ran 10 minutes @ 2200 RPM, good temp and oil psi, then back fired and stalled. I figured this in addition to the slow start killed the cam lobes for sure. I waited a hour, pulled the valve covers to see if there were any loose rocker arms and all looked good. Fired it up again and it ran 25 minutes @2100-2400 RPM. Drained the oil and checked the timing. Set it up @36* at 3500 RPM runs ok. No leaks, normal temps, no pinging heard.

Cam seems ok but I'll wait and see as we only have about 50 miles on it. Runs pretty good wants to keep pulling but we kept it under 4,500 rpm due to the stock pistons and rods used. One thing I didn't like was the Comp break in lube, too liquidity. I like the Sta-Lube moly paste but couldn't find it anywhere local anymore.

That sounds like a pretty good combination, I got 296RWHP/334RWT with almost the same setup, that is going to be alot of fun

Default Checking For Flat Cam Lobes

You ought to check the cam now, before you do more damage, if it's going bad. Fairly easy, remove one valve cover at a time and see if all the pushrods are spinning while it's idling. It'll save a lot of grief down the road. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

I'm looking at the same camshaft... If you have a minute - what compression, carb and converter are you using(if an automatic)? Thanks.

I don't know what caused the backfire. Just because the the cam wasn't broken in for 20 minutes contineuosly doesn't automatically mean the cam will fail.

What I don't understand was why this post was moved to General? This would seem to qualify as a Tech post to me and has in the past. Seems to me the mods are using an arbitrary standard of what's tech and what's not. Which confuses the heck of me and just about everyone else if I had to guess.

The engine is a Targetmaster 350 that I bought in 1981. It has 18k miles on it and was rated at 250 hp. It has cast pistons, stock rods, 4 bolt mains, std oil pump, came with 194 76cc heads and mild cam. I used an sp2p intake and Qjet with M20 and 336 for years with it. It was a nice driver that got 18-20 mpg cruising.
The CR was advertised at 8.5:1 and with the head swap it should be between 9.25-9.5:1. Running all the parts I was going to sell on it; WP Heads, magnum roller tips, RPM intake,750 Demon, HEI. Drove it some more and do have some high carb backfiring, not a good sign but I think the Demon might be a tad too big. I'll see how it works if I switch back to the Q-jet. We only plan to use this until the orignal engine is ready to be built up with a solid cam, Alum heads, and pop ups. Should be coming back out in June.
I don't know why this was moved either, I thought it was technical?

Gary
