No! It's the replacement. In 79, the body was produced in plastic which you see...the 78 body was an alloy. Probably more important if you seek the look is what the tip looks like and that depends on radio type...CB, power or fixed.

I thought I could get under vette, stick camera in there and get a decent shot....but flash washed detail out..(still dark this AM)....but mine is aftermarket with mostly metal case..I think..also,notice nut where antenna exits..my original was just a plastic grommet pushed into hole...

These are both 78 antennas. Like rihwoods said, 78 does not use a chrome bezel, they use a black plastic insert that trims out the antenna hole in the fender. The one on the left is an original 78 and the other is a NOS. These are both for sale if anyone's interested. Mike .

Default Antenna

I have a extra bezel if you need one! I also know a guy in texas that can fix that antenna at a good price.
The one on the left is the correct one, it is actually called a slim line

Both antennas pictured above are 78's. The left one is an original with a solid mast tube(no bracket holes). It is originally out of a 78 Cadillac, mounted in the trunk, why it's so clean. Upper bracket is now correct for Corvette. Before I would ship it to anyone I will replace the nylon leader just to be on the safe side. As I said, it is totally original. Cost? I paid $164 plus shipping, will sell it for $175 plus shipping.(new nylon leader free)
The other is an NOS with the "universal" bracket mounting holes. Will sell it for $225.
I know, these things aren't cheap, I've seen NOS on Ebay go up to $400! I've not sold anything on Ebay and really not in any rush to sell em.
Bought the original one for my 1500 mile 78SA that came to me with the incorrect late79-82 antenna in it. By the time I found the correct mounting brackets to go with it I found an NOS motor, mast sections and a mint used tube. Basically put together a brand new antenna from NOS parts. Bought the NOS antenna later as it was a good deal and I was anticipating buying another 78/79 and figured it would need a new antenna anyway.
Found my new 79 "driver" and it did need an antenna, don't they all! But it needed the late79-82 style. That's what I took out of the 78SA. So I have these two and won't need em.
If you have your original I would be glad to rebuild it for you if it has good mast sections, the middle and bottom sections(those are hard to find) I have a nice used motor and a couple of nylon leaders. Just pay me for parts and shipping.
I may have a black plastic bezel for the fender hole, but not sure til I look at my parts.
The plastic motor housing in the late79-82 is what is called the "slimline". You'll find that the chrome bezel styles won't fit the pre late79 fenders properly. Need to use various spacers because of the slant of the fender.
