I am planning on replacing my radio and upgrading my dash speakers. I have never taken the dash off before (i.e., seen the existing speakers) - so I was wondering if I could get a little advice. Can anyone recommend replacement speakers? I'd like to find one's that I can just "bolt on". Anyone use CustomAutoSounds speakers?

Thanks,

the best place is www.crutchfield.com or www.onlinecarstereo.com, you'll get differing opinions on brands. as far as taking out the dash, thpassenger side is ez: 3 screws above map pocket, 2 screws in door jam, 2 screws in center bezzle. drivers side has same screws but you also will need to drop steering column...good luck
Did this last summer on my '72. Replaced the original crappy speakers with new original crappy speakers from Ecklers. At least now they work. Can't hear the radio over the exhaust anyways. Speakers are held in place from under the dash, pad does not need to come off. The face of your dash is (3) seperate panels. Loosen the (2) steering column retaining nuts and back them off enough to allow the column to drop. This allows the speed/tach cluster to pull out from the dash enough to get to the speaker and retaining nuts. You might have to squeeze your hand in there as you pull the spedo/tach cluster forward to disconnect the speedo cable. I couldn't get enough slack on the speedo without disconnecting. Passenger side is easy as you pull the screws holding that map pocket panel to the dash structure. Save this one for last, its easy and now that your hands are all cramped up from doing the drivers side, you'll appreciate it.
Both the dash & kick panels allow 4X6 to bolt in so I bought some 4x6 to experiment with. I disconnected the dash speakers in the 70s.
Removed the dash speakers by lifting the top pad w/o removal of the dr. side inst. panel or dropping the st. column.
Something you guys might want to consider is speakers in the kicks in our C3s works very well w/ tweeters in kicks or dash. While one would normally want the tweeters near the primary front speakers, tests showed the dash location can work very well for tweeters.
Kenwood eXcelon CD w/ eXcelon 5.25 comps in kicks.
I didn't know the speakers could come out through the top and how I could get to the nuts holding them in. I'll have to keep that in mind but I also did not want to disturb the uncracked dash panel. It is probably about as flexible as a saltine cracker by now!
