There is a horseshoe clip that holds it on. you can buy the tool at a auto store or use a paper clip with a small hook on it slid it behind the handle hook it on the clip and pull off the clip.

If you don’t have the tool you can use a strip of cloth. Take a strip approximately 2 inches wide by 12 inches long (terrycloth works best) slide it centered behind the long part of the crank and while applying pressure pull from side to side like you’re polishing the gear, this will snag the clip and remove it for you. I have had to resort to this technique at the wrecking yard when no tool was available
