hi, last night while cruising on the motorway the belt that drives water pump/power steering/power brakes and alternator suddenly broke, leaving me right in the midlle of the night in the middle of nowhere. how could it happen that it broke just like that? the engine (and the pulleys) have around 5.000 miles...as a conseguence the engine started to heat and arrived to 230 F for a few seconds before i could switch it off , do you think any conseguences there?
thanks/Giu
OK I give! " Power brake belt "you should have a vacumn booster not hydro boost. The water pump is usually driven by more than 1 belt thats the last thing you want to fail.Sorry Mandm1200 I thought you were Panic.I'm so confused,is this a Corvette?

It happens all the time, the V belts "roll" out of the grooves in the pulleys if things are not aligned just right. My small block "burns" new belts until they are seated. I can smell it and see the residue on the front of the air cleaner. Also these engines turn some fairly high rpm's and that can also encourage a belt to go flying off. I have shimmed and tweaked my alternator, PS pump and my water pump pulleys to minimize the mis-alignment, so far so good. Good luck with yours!
my original pulleys were throwing belts when I first got the car(if I got on it pretty hard) messed with alignment for a few weeks but I couldnt get it to stop. switched to march pulleys that have a deeper groove and no problems in a year. it would roll the belt off, then the fan broke it when it hit.
