Default Retouching emblems

I'd like to retouch the red, black and white on the emblems on my 79.

Does anyone have any specific tips on which paint to choose? I'm especially concerned about having the right red.
I'm tempted to simply go out and buy model car paint.

Any tips or suggestions?

Automobile touch-up paint will probably hold up better than model car paint.

I used hobby enamels and the colors are still good.

I did mine with Testors model car paint and the black and white were pretty much dead right (but then again how wrong can black and white be) and the red was pretty close. I've bought some repro emblems and the red is just a little more burgundy than the Testors red model paint.

I'm glad this thread was started. I was just looking for new emblems, but thought, maybe I could repaint them. I may give it a try.

Thanks,
Dino

I used model car paint on my emblems - applied with a tooth pick.

I repainted mine a couple of months back with model paint. Turned out pretty good. Better than spending a lot of $$$ on new emblems. Here's a thread I posted...

The model paint works but it does not hold up real well over time. The sun gets it.

O.K. you guys. I'm gonna give up my best "secret", since you asked. I found some really good stuff to re-do emblems. It is called Porcelaine and it is used to paint on ceramics or metal. Scarlet Red is almost a perfect match for the red in the flags. To use it, you must completely strip the existing paint...get every bit of it off and then wash/dry the emblem thoroughly. You can buy this stuff at a craft store (ie, Michael's, etc.) and also pick up a small/very fine, good quality paint brush. You don't really brush this stuff on as much as you "flow" it on. Get some on the brush and just touch it to the metal so that it wicks onto the surface. Work quickly on each area (one flag checker, etc.) so the paint stays wet and flows. [You have to do the red flag all at once, but start in one corner and keep adding in a continuous manner.] Keep air bubbles to a minimum--pop them immediately with a pin if they show up. When done painting, let it dry thoroughly for 24 hours. They you BAKE the emblem per the instructions on the bottle.

The finished product really looks like paint on fine enamel ware and has a great gloss. Plus, it is very resistant to environmental items (sun, rain, detergent, wax, etc.).

I'll tell you that I screwed up my first one and had to strip it again, until I worked out the bugs in my process. But the latest efforts look like new...or even better than new.
