Default 1972 Front bumper installation

Hey,
Iv'e been restoring a 72 Coupe and its time for the bumpers. I had the car body worked and painted by County Corvette in PA. (very reputable company). My problem is my old bumper has a dent and needs chrome. So I purchased a GM Original (Rechromed) It is one inch longer than my old one (Tip to Tip) and the center bolts won't line up But it looks just like the same casting and is a nice bumper. My question is , does anyone know if GM (back in 72) Fit each car to a bumper or just kept trying bumpers untill they find one that fits?.

Thanks,
Elkhartgreen72 (Dave)

The bumpers start out life all be the same. The Corvette bodies should be all the same, but they are not. I solve this problem by test-fitting the bumper on the car before re-chroming, I slightly bend the shape pen or closed as needed. Usually the chome won't mind, but sometimes it will flake if marginal. I bet the bumpers are the same length, but not the same shape.

Default bumpers

Thanks Jim,

I do know that no two sides are the same with these cars, I also have a nice 71 Onterio Orange. But i did not change the front body panels. Do you think its a good idea to try to bend the bumper? And I don't want to heat the chrome too much. Now I'm afraid to buy another one (What if it don't fit). Then I'll have 3.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If you are selling the bumper im interested...
If it helps I can pull a measurement off mine...maybe it is longer than it should be...the bumper molds are kind of old. ( if they are the GM ones)

We went through 3 bumpers before we found one that fit. You could try bending but we found it caused stress marks in the chrome.

Kyle.

You can see the bumper on Ebay. Go to #250038011620 I just won it for $233.00 + $35.00 Shipping. You can also type my Ebay name (elkhartgreen72) and go to my feedback given (73) and reference the part # to veiw. It is a nice bumper. I guess I'll take a lose as long as it is reasonable. I can't use it

Thanks,
