Default Numbers question

I was looking at the number on the engine of my 71...The first sequence of numbers matches the VIN; and the suffix of the last sequence of letters/numbers is CGZ for LT-1. Does anyone know what the other letters/number represent just before the suffix? Mine reads V0330 (at least that's what it looks like)....or maybe V033O, the second "O" looks like it might be a little more rounded so maybe it's an O as opposed to a zero.

Thanks! Any reason why the zeros might look a little different? I'm assuming they would use the same font for the enitre stamp. Unless it was a restamp and i hope that isn't the case.
Also, if it is March 30 then I'm should the block casting date code near the distributor have the same date?

Dont get worried about a restamp yet. Most of the restamps I've seen are "more" perfect than the originals. Those stamps are put in a gang fixture and are all seperate-so the font could have been differant.Post a pic so some of guys can see it.I have some 71 LT1 numbers pics I will check them to see if they have 2 "0".The block casting date will have to precede the engine number date.

Thanks again. I just checked the block casting date and it does precede 0330...it was Feb 71. I'm running out now but will take a picture of the numbers on the engine later to get feedback...good to know it could have been a different font because now that i look at it the two 3's look different too. I'd be interested to hear what you find with the other 71 LT-1 numbers

Don't sweat it. For reasons know only to GM it was common practice when the stamp calls for 2 "zeros" to stamp one as a zero and one as the letter "O". The same thing also occurs with the number 1 and the letter "I". An engine assembly date of March 11 would be frequently stamped as 031I.

Not really. This was a production operation to pump engines out as fast as possible, not building the crown jewels. The guy that stamped the pad just grabbed a stamp that lloked close to what he needed.

The O got used for the number 0, 6 upside down was used for 9 and vice versa, I got used for 1.

Not rocket science.

Dates sound about right. The 71 LT-1 I use to own had a stamp pad date of 1 Apr and block build of 27 Feb. Your LT-1 must have been pretty close to mine on the engine line.
