Where did the term Sting Ray come from?

Where did the term Sting Ray come from?
In the years where Sting Ray was used, weren't all Corvettes Sting Rays?
If Ford (make) had the Mustang (model), and it existed in distinctly different forms (such as Grande and Mach I), then it made sense to label these sub-models.
But if all Corvettes were Sting Rays, what was the point?

Chevrolet is the make, Corvette is the model brand, Sting Ray was the model name. This model came in two versions, coupe and convertible. All five years were labeled the same. 1963 thru 1967.
Ford is the make, Mustang is the model brand, Mach 1 is the model name. This model only came in one version, sports roof.

Possibly a overhead view of a 63 coupe presented a presence of a stingray fish. I know I recieved that inpression with my 63 coupe. I also know that I never liked the word stingray and within a year or two the fish badges and split rear window were removed. Couldn`t see out of the sucker.

It all goes back to Bill Mitchell and his obsession with deep sea fishing, leading to the Sting Ray and Mako Shark Corvette racers and concepts. This is a subject that has been discussed to death here over the years. For more information, use the instructions in my "Search!" thread that's a C3 Tech sticky or pick up any of the decent hardback books on Corvette history.
63-67 were "Sting Ray" Corvettes.
69-76 were "Stingray" Corvettes.
It's just a badge, nothing else.

I have always felt that the C2's (63-67) wore the Sting Ray badge well, but the C3's (69-82) would have been better called MakoSharks because we all refer to them as the Shark Bodies.

Growing up when someone said "Stingray" they were always referring to the C3. I never heard anyone refer to a C2 as a "Sting Ray" - just as a "Vette" or "Corvette".

Some Corvette history & knowledge is helpful to ID a Stingray.
63-67 In 63, the new smaller body & chassis w/ I.R.S. was called a Sting Ray.
68-77 When the body was redone in 68 at first called Sting Ray in ads & then used Stingray emblems in 69. Emblems are for identification & some can not identify w/o the emblem. Seems some place far more importance on emblems than the factory ever did. The factory wanted to change the new car so that it could be identified as new at the time. Stingray has a meaning & is not an option or emblem, some are unmarked.
Chassis essentially same from 63-77, body essentially same 68-77 & interior essentially same from 68-77.
There can be no question that 68-77 are Stingrays.
Stingray BB hood on 65-66, tail on 63-67 coupes, wings extended from roof 68-77 Stingrays.
During the C3 STINGRAY years 68-77, the term mid year came about to describe C2.
Since 63, for 15 years (63-77) Corvette & Sting Ray were synonymous.
78- 25th anniversay of the Corvette- not Stingray. Many changes.They were already working on the C4 & McLellan had said the styling would be reeled in. 84 induction & 700R4 were in production in 81. So the focus was on the C4.CORVETTE says it all anyway.
