Sure you can. You can do it any way you want.
Last year I took the doors off completely. I spent a lot of time cleaning up the "armpits" of the door. I cleaned and painted the hinges. Then new springs. They were worth the effort. If you're not afraid to remove the doors this is a good way to do it and a good project to do. But you don't need to take off the doors to change springs. The special bent screwdriver-type tool would help.

If you are asking if the spring must be removed before the top hinge is removed, the answer is no. You can remove the hinges with springs intact.
I hope I am helping, not confusing you.

The upper passenger's side hinge is easy to get out.
The upper driver's side hinge is a PIA.
You literally have to remove the dash cluster to get to the bolts.
The spring is part of the hinge assembly, and does not have to be removed to get the entire spring out.

Obvious really, but make sure that you support the doors when working on the hinges.

My passenger side spring was easy on mine when I changed out doors. It just broke in half by rust.
