Was looking at the 80 amp. Any other ones recommended? Old one works just want a chrome one. Any surprises on replacing it because everything else with this car seems like a project. Thanks.
Most of the aftermarket alternators have the connections swapped from the C3. The wiring will work, but has to be stretched to fit. Not a big suprise, really.

Excuse the ignorance but, stretched to fit?
Nothing is a sursprise with this car anymore. Just to change the valve covers is becoming a major project.(Still have all the smog garbage)

My 78 and 79 alternators are "clocked" at 12 o-clock. The 2 prong plugin at the TOP of the alternator. If it's at the side at 3 o-clock the wires will be stretched. It's not hard to clock it correctly if it's wrong. Take out the 4 screws and split the case apart. You'll see the brushes hanging out of the holder. Make sure the springs are in the holder, replace the brushes and you'll see a small hole lined up with the brushes in the case. Insert a paper clip from the outside into the case that will hold the brushes into the holder. Put the case back together in the correct position and screw it together. Pull out the paper clip.
What Yellow72 suggested is just the 2 case halves and probably the fan and pulley ONLY. You swap all the insides from your existing alternator into the new case. Not hard to do once you open up the alternator and see how simple it really is.
In Rudolph S's pics of his beautiful engine compartment his alternator appears to be clocked at 9 o-clock which isn't a problem, but imagine if it was at 3 next to the valve cover. Long reach for the wires.

I think I understand. So my two prong plug-in is at the 9 oclock like Rudolph's, looks like the battery at the three. So to keep it simple I should probably get the one Rudolph has, isn't 100 amp overkill for mine? or it doesn't matter. I do have power locks, windows, A/C, no special powerful radio. When buying a new one is it standard that it is at the 9oclock? It doesn't state that anywhere.

Looked at some engine compartment pics of 80-82s and those years appear to be factory clocked at 9 like Rudolph S's. A buddy of mine got a chrome one from Corvette Central for his 73 and it came clocked at 12. BUT his 73 also needed to be at 9. He was afraid to open it up and change it so he just stretched the wires a bit and wire tied them in place. Maybe the vendor can clock it to your needs, but it's not that hard to do it your self. I've seen some advertised on ebay where the seller will re clock them for ya.
