I helped a friend do it on an 81. I did all the fiberglass work and paint. He had done an 80 previously. No special bracing, though I am pretty sure that the doors will sag a bit after a while. That can be fixed with retrofitting the door support pieces. Parts are readily available. Others on the forum have done it or are in the process.
Purchase the AIM for any year where convertibles were available. Compare the coupe and convertible installations, including the bird cages. That will give you an idea of what is involved going from coupe to convertible. Convertible deck lid with hardware, the rear surround panel, and folding tops irons will be your biggest expenses. Door glasses could get pricey.
If you're careful dismantling the coupe, you might be able to sell the parts from the coupe to recover some of your costs.
