I keep hoping to see my dad's 68 race car in some of these vintage race pictures. He raced nccc races all over Michigan from the early 70's through the mid 90's. I'm now fixing up the old racer.

Hello 2016!

Still logging serial numbers for 68 cars, but the web now has a database thats pretty good! Hope that a few can post some new Vintage Race pictures....I will soon start posting my project pics too

I thought there was a red Greder car in CA.

I remember they cancelled the race on Sunday cause the fog came right down on the racetrack. I'll have to dig up some more pics of the car.

I know this car well, it's still around, and still racing!

It was first raced in 1972 by a husband and wife from NY (Long Island??), Larry and Dawn Vitelli. She normally raced the 65 in BP, and he usually raced a big block 68 in AP. Later, the car moved around the country, eventually ending up in Kentucky.

Today, the car is owned and raced by Jim Glass of Kingston NY, and I crew on it, when I can. Jim bought the car in 2008, restored it, and has been vintage racing it for the last 7 years.

I'm pretty sure that these two pictures are of Larry Vitelli, driving the 68 that was the team car to his wife's 65.

I remember that weekend, but I think it was a couple years later, because we were still running SCCA Solo in 80. I'm pretty sure it was one of the Tri-Region's Double weekends, either a Regional or National, and I think it was on Father's Day.

I know I was there with Jerry Kuhn, and his white 1980 GT-1 Corvette, and also helping Jim Briody with his Peugeot SSB (or SSC?) car. It was Sunday around noon, and the Showroom Stock cars were either on track, or lined up on the grid to go out, when they decided to cancel the races. We were standing on pit road, and the fog was so bad that we couldn't see the grandstands, just across the track! We left the track, and before we got to I-80 (about 5 miles) it was clear, sunny and probably 20 degrees warmer.

Come to think of it, that's pretty typical of the weather we always experienced at Pocono.

Tell me Pop, do you recall if this was the same weekend, that the big thunderstorm came across the track, during the GT-1 race? I remember one year on Saturday at the Double Nats, A storm came in from then tunnel turn, and across the speedway, just as the GT-1 race was starting. They red flagged the race and let everyone come in for rains. I was changing the fronts, and had no problems, but the two guys doing the rears, got all screwed up. The Corvette had deep Jongbloed wheels on it, and between the depth of the wheels, the fact that it had gotten very dark during the storm, and the guy handling the lug nuts couldn't see through his wet glasses, they managed to lose 2 lug nuts. The SCCA marshals were throwing a fit, because everyone else was ready to go, and we were holding them up. We finely figured out that they had double nutted two of the long wheel studs, and got the problem fixed.

It didn't help much though, as we didn't have any form of defogger, and Jerry couldn't see out the windshield, or reach it to clear it. He was running 6th or 7th, just following the trail lamps of one of those square Volve's, when the Volvo missed the entrance to the infield road course, and continued down the main straight toward NASCAR Turn 3. Of course, Jerry followed him right past the turn, and on down the straight too!

This is the Corvette we were racing back then, though this particular shot was taken at Summit Point.

Pop, I appologise because sometime back, I promissed to get you Tony's (formerly of Corvette World), contact info.

He now manufactures and wholesales, Corvette parts as Kustom Enterprises, but still in Greensburg. His number is 724-468-1140.

How's the new Corvette coming, you haven't posted any pictures of it lately?

Pocono. Doesn't sound right. I found my log book and it has "June Sprints" entered. Being that the race was cancelled and rescheduled it turned into a double nat. I was working for a steel mill and couldn't get the time off to return. I was always a shoestring racer and still am ! I build my cars from scratch, I enjoy that almost as much as driving them.
I hope to roll my chassis outside tomorrow ,I'll have to shoot some pics. Thanks for the contact info ! Pops

You are correct those are the Vitelli cars. I met Larry in the early 70's and acted as his pit crew.

You should give Jim Glass a call, I bet he'd like to talk to you.

If you want to get together with the car again, Jim's shop in Kingston's, not all that far from Danbury. Or better yet, come up to Lime Rock June 3 & 4 for the Jag Club, VSCCA & HRG races. I think Jim's planning on having the car there that weekend, even tough it's only a little over a week before we leave for the SVRA vintage race at Indy.

Jim's shop number is 845-331-5666.

Here's Gary Carlen's '69 B Production racer from the mid-seventies. At the time he was one of the fastest small block drivers on the west coast, He held the BP course record at Sears Point for a time and routinely dominated SF Regional races. I was privileged to be his crew chief for a couple of seasons before I went Formula Ford racing (couldn't afford a Corvette back then).

I didn't realize this thread was still alive. Best CF thread ever in my opinion. This has to be the longest running thread ever on the forum. Would like to see some new pics if anyone has any.
