My aunt has a Black 95 she bought new. 1 owner, all documentation, all repairs and maintainance at the dealership she bought it from. Used to commute so has quite a few freeway miles. Never in an accident. She is 60 and lives in Orange, works in LA and has been the only driver of the car. If you want to check it out let me know via PM. Not sure on price but think under $9000 will buy it..

I agree with the advice above. I have both a C3 and a C4. My heart is with the C3 but honestly my head is for the C4.

C4 prices are really in the tank right now. If you do a nationwide search I think you could possibly come up with an LT1 C4 for nearly that amount (92 or newer).

My 91 L98 is extremely reliable, not a spot of rust, everything works, goes like snot and gets 22 mpg on the highway. I could drive it anywhere.

I suggest you take as many for a drive as possible and ask questions in the C4 section as well.

My C4 is the girl you bring home to mom and dad......the C3 is the babe you date on Saturday nights.......

I dunno man, the C4's just don't have that presence the C3's have. Even when they were brand new they weren't really head-turners. The C3's just have that look about them that to me even the C6 doesn't beat.

I couldn't agree more. I love both my 73 and my 88, but as a DD it's a no brainer...I'd choose my C4...

If your looking to spend 10K buy a carfor 8K so you have some money for repairs. I don't care what you buy it will need something. Even C4 1996 is 12 years old.

capevettes For $10,000 you can buy a nice, reliable, low mileage, fuel injected C4. They are also fuel efficient. I love the C3's but for a DD for 10 grand the C4 is the way to go.
I would look for a 92 or newer (LT1) w/a six speed. The difference in price between a 90 or 91 (L98) and a 92 (LT1) isn't enough to worry about. The difference in performance is drastic. Performance per dollar, the C4's are hard to beat. If you just have to have a C3, I would look at the '78,'79 and '80 L82 cars. Add your own O/D trans.

This is a real no-brainer imho.

'90 or newer with a 6 speed.

I did my homework and bought my '78 18 years ago and never had any major problem. It use to be my daily driver in summer time, now that we have a dauther i only use it occasionaly.

As for the C4 i would go for the '90 up they are a lot better looking.

Chosing a vette never was a head choice. It's always a heart decision.
If it was for a inteligent reasons no one would have a Vette.

Best value in a C3 is probably a 74-77 with the sugar scoop rear window.

Best value for a performance DD is probably a 90-ish C4.

I would say before you make up your mind here you need to go drive a C3 and then a C4....depends which one floats your boat. A C4 is going to be a much nicer driver in my opinion in every aspect, ride quality, gas milage, performance. Plus it will be much newer and probably have less miles etc on it for the money. The price on C4s right now is bargin basement.

If your only wanting to drive it a day or two a week because you have another ride(bike)...I would say go for the C3 if thats what you want. As long as you have a back-up, because, rest assured, it will break down eventually.

I have both too, and I love them both, but get what YOU want.

A lot of good advice for your budget. It is true that you cna find a very clean C4 in you budget and it would be the best driver. I have had both and had comuted with both the C4 and the C3. I lived in San Diego 12 years and all I ever drove was a C3 and it worlked well. In Kansas City I comuted 40 mile one way to my office in a C4 (spring-Fall) and never had a problem.

If you are used to riding a bike then you would have no problem comuting in the C3.

It has to be what you prefer and I think all of us have agreed mostly that both generation can be reliable as any car.

Good Luck with the search; you'll find one

And I'd look for an L-82/4 speed car. The 4 speed makes it less a boulevard cruiser and more of a "driver's car."

But as stated before, be flexible... you might find an '81 4 speed car with a freshened engine...and no computer controls (I did).

If your looking at C4's there was a major interior change 93? 94?. I owned a '94 A4 for a few years. It served me well.

The late C4's are much better driver cars than the early C4's. Big improvements in fuel mileage, performance, handling, comfort and apperance in the car in that 10 plus year span.

Let me see if I understand you correctly. You want to buy a 30 year old car drive it to work as a daily driver about 75 miles a day and have little repair or maintainence cost. If that is what you are looking for good luck. That is what you are going to need. Luck and lots of it.

30 year old cars have 30 year old parts. They wear out, they break, they fail and they have a 30 year head start on new cars. If you want a reliable commuter car you need to find something more economical and less worn out. If you want something cool buy a vette but be prepared to start repairing and replacing parts. That car that has 90,00 miles on it in 30 years is not going to stand up very well or very long if you intend to put 20K on it this year.
