Default BB Rear Springs?

Ok, I'm replacing my rear spring on my 72 which is a 7 leaf. I have my tank sticker and it does not list F-41 as one of the options. All of the reference guides state that the 7 leaf spring only came on the F-41 package in 72 which only came with the ZR1. All other come with a 9 leaf standard spring.

So, did Bubba repace my original 9 leaf spring with a weak 7 leaf unit?

My tank sticker shows both the front spring codes and the rear spring codes but I can't find them listed in any reference guides.

The code for the rear spring is G32EA and the front spring code is F62HV.

Anyone out there have an option code book?

I found a listing of RPO codes at this web site:

http://www.348-409.com/rpo1.html

however it lists several RPOs, including G32, that just say rear spring next to them.

From your information you have a 1972 LS-5... If I had to guess from the springs that you posted, I would also say that it was equipped with air conditioning as well.

The following are the springs/rates for 1972:

FRONT SPRINGS

350 (no A/C) - Part #3931823 - "HS" - 250 lbs/in
350 (with A/C) - Part #3931824 - "HT" - 264 lbs/in
454 (no A/C) - Part #3931825 - "HU" - 284 lbs/in
454 (with A/C) - Part #3931826 - "HV" - 325 lbs/in
F41 (all) - Part #3832518 - "EA" - 550 lbs/in

REAR SPRINGS

350/454 (except F41) - Part #3850839 - "EA" - 70 lbs/in (per side)
F41 (all) - Part #3828811 - "EB" - 152 lbs/in (per side)

The front springs were actually chosen based on the weight of the car with options (weight split front/rear), but it usually took the addition of air conditioning to bump the front spring rates for a given engine.

From your information, the front springs (F62HV) are rated at 325 lbs/in and were almost always used on big block Corvettes with a/c. The rear spring (G32EA) is the nine leaf standard spring used on most Corvettes in 1972.

The reason that you don't see these springs in the option book is because they aren't options... They are standard springs (with the front springs chosen based on vehicle weight with options)

Hope that this helps.
