So im searching CL, and find a post that says "1972 Corvette Stingray Project $3000". I was immediatly interested in it and called the guy up. Here is the conversation.
Me: Hi, im calling about your corvette for sale. What can you tell me about it?
Bubba: well its a 1973, auto 350, i pulled the engine tranny and interior and i got way over my head.
Me:Wait, your ad said 1972. Is it a 1972 or 1973?
Bubba: I don't know. some guy came over the other day and said it was a 1973.
Me:Oh ok that makes sense. So it has a rubber bumper on the front and not the back right?
Bubba: Um, well i dont know. I do have two new front and back bumper covers for it...
Me: uh 1973 didnt have a rear bumper "cover" . Do you know the VIN #? bc ithe 6th digit can tell you the year.
Bubba: Whats a VIN?
Me: Vehicle identification number...
Bubba:Well its at the shop so ill have to look later
Me: Ok thanks for your time...
What do you guys think? I think he should know more about the car before he sells it. i'm suprised he knows its a corvette.
**Ok, he changed the ad to 1973, but still...

I met a bubba that tried to take a wrecked 73 and pass it off as a 69. He put the front end of a 69 on the car and listed it as a 427 BB. I guess he didn't know what a VIN was either.
The wheel well flares in the rear were the first things to give it away, and the VIN confirmed it.

If i had my way, my backyard would already be filled with vettes that were cheap, and just 'waiting on line' to restore. you would be suprised how many rubber bumper cars you can buy that neeed suspension rebuilds and cosmetic work for under $3000

Bubba might also be smarter than you give him credit for......listing a 73 as a 72 (by mistake of course) to get more people to call him about it!

That's a funny story. Sure sounds like Bubba. It might be very interesting if you could arrange to go look at the car, the shop and meet Bubba. Maybe get a couple of shots of the shop, car and Bubba. It certainly would be good for a few laughs if you posted them

I actually met multiple bubbas in one night. I'm in the market for a third gen T-top Camaro or Firebird to go with my Vettes and saw an ad in Autotrader for an 86 bird that looked like it might have possibilities. When I pulled up to the seller's house, his buddy (Bubba 1) was backing the car out from the carport. Bubba 1 had no shirt, torn jeans and long, greasy hair. He asked me if I wanted to go for a test drive. Kind of a stupid question since I had just driven 2 1/2 hours to see the car. Before I could get in, the seller (Bubba 2) had to pull a pile of junk off the passenger seat. As soon as I sat down, I could smell the alcohol on Bubba 1's breath and wondered what I was in for. We pulled onto the main street and he yelled, "want to see what this'll do?" The carb stumble and oil smoke sure impressed me! Fortunately, after about 5 minutes, he offered to trade places and I drove us back. When I got up from the passenger seat, I noticed a 12" kitchen knife I had been sitting on and the beer my "chauffeur" had been cradling between his legs as he drove. The gas gauge was pegged on "E" and all I could think was getting stopped or running out of gas with this dude next to me. Fortunately, I got it back to the house without any incidents. The car, which had been described as "in pretty good shape except for some clear coat peeling" was absolutely trashed. The doors sagged so badly that the sill panels had been ground off and the rocker channels were next. The upholstery was all ripped up and someone had taken the rear spoiler off by ripping it upward, which left all the bolts still in the body. The motor had oil leaks and probably a coolant leak, although it was hard to be sure with all the gunk everywhere. What a wreck. While I had been driving, my friend got to talk with the other two beer-drinking bubbas left at the house. He said it was an experience as well.
After we pulled away (sadly disappointing my chauffeur who had spent the whole time telling me how AWESOME this car was and that I HAD to buy it), I noticed that their house was definitely the embarrassment of an otherwise pretty nice neighborhood. I almost turned around and asked them if any of them had ever owned a 76 Corvette. If my car didn't pass through their hands, it must have been a close relative.
