I am going to replace the outer door-edge/window weatherstrip on my '82 and looks like the glass is in the way of removing screws that hold this strip onto the door panel. Must the glass be completely removed? Is this is a big pain or not to bad? I also need to unbolt the elec mirror to see why is wobbling inside (not the trunion) and looks like glass keeps one bolt unaccessible.
By they way - thanks to those who talked about cleaning the door lock contacts with dremel tool - I cleaned the terminals and this fixed mine last night.

Yes you will have to remove the glass,, but its not as bad as it looks, everything sort of comes out easy, if the rollers on the glass itself are not rusted remove them inside to ease taking it out and installation in the reverse. You may or may not have to do minor trimming of the new seal at the ends and to ease installation put some lite greese on the studs, they are tuff pushing in.

I just did that to a 75 vert., and I assume they are similar. On mine, you can raise the window till you can see the 2 nuts that hold the glass to the channel on the regulator mechanisim. There is a hole in the interior pannel that you must line the nut up with. Once these 2 nuts are off, you can pull the top of the glass inward and let the glass down to the bottom of the door. On mine, that was enough room to install the new seal you are talking about. If you do decide to remove the glass, be sure and clean the dried up grease out of the front vertical channel that the window guide runs in. Since the glass only goes up so high each time, the section above this get filled from grease and over the years, mine was as hard as concrete.
I have a 81 vette but I'm pretty sure the windows are the same. There are two bottom stops at the bottom of the front and rear rails that the window rollers slide in. If you loosen the screws for the stoppers and lower the window all the way down it will give you enough room to change the outter seal, with-out removing the window from the door.
