SHARK OR STINGRAY ? Im confused????
Could someone explain why we have Corvette STINGRAY's yet they are referred to as sharks ? and even have pictures of sharks as there icon's !!! I could understand if you had a Mako and called it a shark, but a stingray a shark ??????

The reason is the previous generation, '63 to '67, were badged Sting Ray- two words, so that generation is also referred to as Stingrays in conversation. To differentiate, C3s are sometimes referred to as Sharks, after the mako shark it was based on, and 2nd gens are referred to as Stingrays. Besides which, GM didn't badge the 68, or 77 through 82 as Stingrays. Mainly a marketing decision apparently, but it looks cool. C.

There was an early design version of the C3 dubbed the "Mako" shark... When the C3 was produced, that moniker got revised to the Stingray. Interestingly, the '68 had no "Stingray" badging; that didn't start until '69.

I call them Sharks because to me they look more like a Shark than a Stingray.
That, and I don't think the Stingray name should have been used one the C3 unless it was going to be used on ALL of them considering it made no difference in the car at all, and several years did no get the badge.

The fact is, they look more like sharks than anything. Back in the 70's, they called them "late models" because, uh, thats what they were. I've even heard them called 'coke bottles" in days past.
Early cars were called "bathtubs" or just solid axles... then there were Sting rays and midyears... its all just conversation. Don't think too hard.

STINGRAY refers to the body design.
http://ganeys.home.sprynet.com/STINGRAY.htm
The new smaller body & chassis w/ I.R.S was introduced in 63. It applies to the 2 STINGRAY body styles 63-67 & 68-77.
Stingray- BB hood on 65-66, tail on 63-67 coupes, wings extended from roof 68-77 Stingrays.
Maybe this will help some. The new smaller Sting Ray body in development.

Since 63, for 15 years (63-77) Corvette & Sting Ray were synonymous.
Can be debated on 78-82. Many changes. Note that the 78- rear glass is reminiscent of the 63-67 coupe. Some consider all C3 to be.
78- 25th anniversay of the Corvette- not Stingray. Many changes. They were already working on the C4 & McLellan had said the styling would be reeled in. 84 induction & 700R4 were in production in 81. So the focus was on the C4. CORVETTE says it all anyway.
Mako Shark - concept car for C2
Mako Shark II - concept car for C3
Manta Ray - Mako Shark II was redone after C3 introduction- the back is similiar to 74-77.

VB5869,
I still call it a 'late model'. To me it'll never become a 'shark' or a 'C-3'.
Regards,
Alan

I'm a whole lot less confused about Sharks and Stingrays than I am about whatever in hell that thing is in your avatar. Satan's spawn? Sorry, couldn't resist commenting on it. Great picture. Freaks me out - but great picture.

If one removes the targa tops (t-tops) on pre "78 'Vette , and stands back afar from the car...viewing the car from a frontal-side view....and it is a silver-blue such as my '77...the Dorsal fin (roof ) and open mouth (grill) and tail ('82 style) of a Landshark is clearly seen.

I do call my dog a puppy though because he looks young and playful compared to a seasoned and weathered dog even though he's 5 in human years. I also call him a **** when he poops in the house.
Oh, and yes, if he looked like the avatar dog I would have named him Rat or Gremlin, or something like that.

when your wife is relieved that the package that was just delivered to you wasn't a part or tool for the Vette!
When you bust your butt working around the house all of the holiday weekend and "your wife" asks if you want to go for a ride in the Vette

I agree they are late models. 68/73 did looks something like the prototype Mako Shark that was designed to look like the mounted fish on the GM'S president's wall. After that they looked like they were designed by a committee from the EPA & NSB. A glob that cant get out of its own way.
