After searching, I found that rubber bumpers are used when necessary to align hood to fenders. Parts suppliers don't even list them for 71. I assume they are all the same, can I use ones listed for 80-82??
The hood component is fairly stiff and molded in a particular shape. I would almost guess that you have a top surround panel that was not glued to the front inner fenders at the proper height in the center sections. I would check into unbonding these areas and lifting them up and re-bonding them.

You may end up cracking the hood to match the levels.
Cracking the hood? Yikes! Sounds like I need to do some detective work before doing anything. Now is the time I guess, I'm currently taking all paint off in preparation for new paint. Hood is lower than fenders in the middle, surround needs to go up??
I don't think the 71 AIM shows any rubber bumpers, except on the male side of the hood latches.
There were anti-rattle bumpers for 73-76, stabilizer blocks for 74-79, and stabilizer blocks for 80-82.
Warped hoods and surrounds are pretty common. But I think you need to be pretty careful 'wedging' them into alignment.

Alan
Here's a picture of some hood/surround alignment being done.

I had to break the bond of the inner fenders and raise the middle of both fenders to get the hooh lined up in the middle. It was not too hard to do but it would have been easier with the body off, if I had only known at the time I would have broken the bond then.
